About me

Hi -- I'm John Checkett (pronounced as in, Check it out!), a highly educated therapist holding degrees in several of the social sciences. I'm the first man in history to earn a master's degree in Women's Studies in Florida, an academic discipline which I have also taught on a university level. I also hold university degrees in communication arts and social work, as well as being an LCSW. I've worked in emergency screening, providing spot analysis for emergency mental health cases with no advance notice. I have also worked for years in the prison system, with inmates experiencing mental health difficulties. I'm an excellent listener and communicator, and I specialize in problems related to gender, problems between couples -- which are usually matters of communication -- and social justice. I employ an integrative approach, drawing especially upon cognitive behavioral therapy, Jungian and narrative therapy, addressing such matters as self-care, empowerment, self image, self esteem and conflict resolution.

Reviews

These quotes represent just a few of the many positive reviews that we have received for Prof. John Checkett. We don't pay anyone to provide their review and they are all made voluntarily. Some people's experience receiving therapy with BetterHelp might be different.

Professor Checkett is great at listening to me and getting to the bottom of what I'm feeling. He's supportive of me but also helps to ground my thoughts in reality and gives me insight into why I'm feeling how I feel. He checks my negative thoughts with active exploration, which is a habit I continue to follow outside of sessions.

Prof. Checkett is wonderful. He listens to your concerns, asks insightful questions, and gives you options. He makes you feel understood, that you are important, and that your feelings matter. I’ve never felt lesser. He makes, what I feel might be an awkward conversation or topic, be ok. He has helped me overcome myself. He has given me structure and techniques to handle my particular situation. He is my safe space to talk and discuss openly. I would highly recommend Prof. Checkett to anyone.

Prof Checkett can be all over the place with our talks sometimes but he always finds relevance in what I’m saying and gives me tools. He helps me understand different viewpoints and validates how I feel.
