About Me

I am a licensed professional counselor in Texas and have years of experience working with a variety mental health issues and ages. I have specialized in working with the LGBTQ population, with anything from helping people through the process of figuring out their identity to relationship counseling to coping with any oppression they might face. I began my career working with individuals with anger management needs and currently have an extensive amount of experience with families and helping parents through any issues they might be facing.
I have knowledge and practice of many prominent counseling theories, and will adapt my counseling approach to your needs and goals. I tend to implement a solution-focused approach in order to not only hone in on what your goals are, but also to get you to those goals as quickly as possible. I enjoy using cognitive-behavioral techniques to confront anything that is standing in the way of your goals and to promote positive thinking.
I am a kind-hearted and a very open-minded counselor, and am proud to be accepting of all walks of life. I am able to incorporate religion-based counseling, but am also open to individuals that are anti-religious. I am eager to help you achieve your goals and would love to hear what concerns you have. Looking for help is a monumental step towards change and I hope that I can work beside you through the next steps!

Ryan Smith listens to and demonstrates understanding of the issues that are presented to him. He does not appear to be phased by the complexity of some of the situations discussed. He tries as much as possible to remain neutral. I would recommend him as a Therapist.

Responsive. Tentative. Understanding. I went through a few other counselors prior to finding Ryan. I can tell you he is leaps and bounds ahead of his peers on this platform and I hope to write a more informative review once I’m further down this road with him.

I feel like the therapy I'm going with Ryan and betterhelp has really been helpful especially as I am in a PHP and IOP program. It provides more individualized counseling and it's more immediate and consistent. Almost daily which I truly need right now. I would highly recommend Ryan and better help

Written by L.I. on Jan 31, 2018 after counseling with Ryan for 6 months on issues concerning lgbt, and relationship

I haven't had much experience with talking to someone about certain issues before, and Ryan was the first one. He made me feel comfortable right from the start. We have been talking for the past six months and his support has definitely helped me deal with what I was going through. He always replied in a timely manner and made sure to let me know if he wasn’t going to be available for a certain period. He would be there for me if I needed him, but he would also follow up with me in case I hadn’t contacted him in a little while. I really enjoyed my experience here, but I can honestly say that this was 100% due to Ryan.

Written by A.N. on Oct 10, 2017 after counseling with Ryan for 2 weeks on issues concerning depression, stress, anxiety, relationship, and family

Ryan Smith has a great knack for digging in a little deeper and asking questions that lead to more positive ideas and tools that I can use in my life. I had always thought I was a positive person and had not realized how negative I had become toward myself and others. Ryan has really helped with a paradigm shift of sorts and I am beginning to look at everyday events in a more positive light.

Written by N.I. on Oct 09, 2017 after counseling with Ryan for 2 months on issues concerning depression, stress, anxiety, lgbt, self esteem, anger, career, and bipolar

I don't have much to say except that Ryan has the ability to quickly become a friend than you can confide in... When I speak with him that's what I feel and I don't think of him as just a counselor and though many people may not think that's a good thing, that too me is priceless.

Written by M.I. on Oct 03, 2017 after counseling with Ryan for 2 weeks on issues concerning stress, anxiety, and self esteem

I was assigned Ryan Smith after feeling that I wasn't getting quality support from my previous counselor. I have to admit that I don't utilize him nearly as much as I should, but he has been incredible when I have. I have some pretty bad anxiety issues that stem from my younger years, but he has helped me reframe my thoughts so that this doesn't get the best of me. It's a work in progress, but he's helped me so much more than anyone else has! Also, he checks in on me when I haven't messaged him for a few days. He shows genuine compassion and care for my issues. I'd definitely recommend Ryan to anyone, especially people having issues with anxiety.

Ryan has provided me a much overdue and necessary confidential outlet to bounce my ideas and struggles off of. I was in traditional face to face therapy for 2 years after my divorce, but I feel like I have been offered totally different vantage points I had not before considered with Ryan. I do recommend this service to anyone needing a confidential sound board and have actually already encouraged a friend to join.
