About me

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Pennsylvania and board certified by the National Board of Certified Counselors. I have worked in both private practice and at local agencies, as well as in the school system and in higher education. I have over 17 years of clinical experience with various populations with a wide variety of concerns, ranging from psychiatric conditions, addictions, physical trauma, emotional trauma, grief/loss/end of life, as well as menopause, healthy aging, career and life coaching. I have many years beyond working in the mental health setting in other capacities. I have a post master's certificate to teach psychology and have worked intensively with educational planning.

My counseling style is warm, empathetic and interactive. I believe that the most productive therapy happens when clients are encouraged to be the experts of their own lives and that the goals of therapy are to help them find the options, skills and perspectives that can empower them to make changes to live a healthier and happier life. I utilize Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Emotionally Focused Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Solution Focused Therapy in my practice and emphasize maintaining appropriate boundaries within the therapeutic alliance.

I see clients who are 25 and older.

I look forward to working with you!

Shelly is fantastic and a perfect match for me. She is the ideal combination of supportive, caring, and knowledgable. She often tells me the science of what's going on as well as offering insight to what is "normal" which keeps things in the right perspective. She's the best!

Written on Jun 17, 2024 after therapy with Shelly for 5 months on issues concerning depression, stress, anxiety, relationship issues, family conflicts, intimacy-related issues, parenting issues, self esteem, career difficulties, coaching, and adhd

Shelly Proper immediately put me at ease, she was friendly and empathetic, was attentive and respectful, really listened to my needs and concerns, and on our first virtual meeting had proactive discussions and ideas to help me right away to achieve my goals. Before our meeting she had worksheets for me to do that I felt really helped me to fine tunes my goals and bring me clarity to make our visit easier for me and productive.
She is one of the best therapists I have had the pleasure to work with. So impressed!
