About Me

As we transition through life and experience what this world has to offer, we start to realize that there is both good and bad, happiness and sadness, anxiety and joy.
Moments in our lives may require insights from others and help may be necessary. That is my goal here...to help in the best way I can. Throughout my professional counseling career, I have had the unique experiences of work with individuals of diverse backgrounds and difficulties. I have worked with and provided counseling to individuals who have experienced domestic violence, rape, and other forms of trauma. My experiences include work with adults and children. I have also worked as a counselor for homeless families and children. My work has taken me to an understanding of the human experience that is accepting and knowledgeable. My approach to counseling is typically centered on an existential and humanistic approach which encourages my clients to work toward their purpose. I also use the tenets associated with cognitive behavior therapy. I believe that each person with whom I work is working toward their own profound and essential purpose in this life and I want to help them realize their potential and strengths. I employ a compassionate and empathetic approach because I understand that the relationships between counselor and client is essential to the success of my clients. I want to understand the problem from the perspective of the client and in doing so, I can help each client a unique way.

As for so many others, my personal and work life were both severely impacted by the pandemic. The future was looking rather bleak and, perhaps worse, everyone around me seemed to agree that nothing was going to be getting any better. My Wednesday sessions with Dr. Harrell have been immensely valuable in all of this and I'm really not sure whether I'd have been able to get back on my feet without her support. To the best of my knowledge, she cannot fly or shoot laser beams from her eyeballs but if I did have the option of swapping Dr. Harrell for the Second Coming of Christ, I think I'd politely decline.

I met Dr. Harrell through BH in the toughest phase of my life with no hope and a bleak of light in my dark tunnel. She turned that 360 degrees around giving me more to think about and for. She keeps instilling strength in me and helps me reaffirm the positivity in myself. Dr. Harrell is a warm and empathetic counsellor. She will check in on you if she hasn’t heard from you in awhile, so you know that she cares deeply for your well-being. There is a sense of calmness in the way she approaches you, making it easy to open up and talk about things that are upsetting you. She is very lax in her approach, emphasizing the fact that it is up to YOU to come to her. Through the last 6 months, she has opened my eyes significantly on a lot of things that have been inside for quiet some time. Thank you Dr. Harrell, your help has meant the world to me :)

I am new to this as I work in the field of counseling. I appreciate this confidential platform and can see how professionals like myself, who are scared to admit they are struggling with their own life issues, that this can be a very valuable service. My only criticism is about cultural competency. I am used to clinicians now knowing about Indigenous issues because it is rarely addressed in the counselor training, but I am just pointing this out. I do have to say that because Tanya has experience with disabled persons, this has been very beneficial. I just need Tanya to push me. I can take it. I don't want my past or thoughts to rob me of the life I deserve.

Dr. Harrell gave me the support I needed while taking brave steps to advocate for my child while affirming my transformation as a person. She always had tools to get me to think through things from a new angle and good recommendations for books and podcasts that were on point as well.

Dr Harrell has been a wonderful counsellor so far. Supportive, encouraging and an excellent listener . Providing me with a safe space, to communicate things I have never had a chance to voice .
She has provided me with worksheets and tools to review what is important and given me great insight and useful tools on how I can move forward in my relationships with others.

Dr. Tanya has been a huge help. She comes out as a warm, kind and an understanding person. Her approach to reach her clients with patience and prompt response is one of the key ingredients that makes her one of the best counsellor. She puts extra efforts into understanding her clients background, empathise with them and come up with the right questions to help her clients understand themselves better. I’m truly impressed by the hard work she did to help me. She took sessions at 5 AM in the morning as per my convenience without any complaints which shows how passionate she is when it comes to helping people. Dr Harrell is a compassionate, patient, very wise therapist who has helped me immensely in finding my way back from trauma to tenacity! Back to the authentic me, whom I temporarily lost in a quagmire of hurt and depression. Dr. Harrell is truly a gift. She listens to what I say, and takes time to thoughtfully respond. She makes me feel heard and is helping me learn to love myself. I got overwhelmed during one of our chats and didn’t respond for a weekend. On Monday afternoon, she messaged me and asked how my weekend was and how I was doing. Not once did she ask why I never responded to her last message. She understood. I truly believe she cares about me, and that makes it so easy to talk to her. I have only been speaking to Dr Harrell for a couple of weeks. She's changed my life in this short time. She's opened my mind to myself and up until this point I didn't realize how disregarding I was to myself. She's helped me to disassociate myself from my problems and is teaching me to tend to the little joys that I am now finding. Dr. Harrell has a caring nature, and is very professional. So far meetings with her have helped me immensely, as I feel she is definitely focused on how to help me, rather than seeing me as 'just another patient'. Although we only meet officially once a week, she keeps in contact with me throughout the week with worksheets and homework to keep me reminded of the contents of our last session. She replies my messages, and I feel I can reach out to her any time, not just during our scheduled sessions.
