Welcome! Kudos to you for looking into your own betterment. It is both my desire and requirement to disclose a little bit of information about myself so you may better choose a fit for your therapist. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor or Licensed Mental Health Counselor, different states have different titles, but I am currently practicing in Michigan. I have been a psychotherapist for over 7 years and have been fortunate to work with so many kinds of individuals and witnessed so many Ah-ha moments.
I have found a particular passion working with girls and women that are interested in working on their sense of identity and learning to have compassion for themselves and those around them. My belief is that we all influence each other greatly and have the power within our own lives to create a more compassionate environment overall. I use a skills-based approach initially, specifically Mindfulness-based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Essentially, we want to train your brain to think and act in a way that is more helpful to you and you can’t do that without replacing the skills that you find unhelpful. If you are feeling stuck, that can result in desperateness and anxiety. I’d want to work on building up your toolbox to deal with those thoughts and feelings that keep you focused on the unknown and bring you back to the present. The amazing part about this evidenced-based approach is that with some focus and intention, you will be able to witness changes in your thinking very quickly.
When you believe that you have the skills to manage life, I would like to focus on your sense of self, your identity. I use a lot of literature and research from Brene Brown on Shame Resilience and Kristin Neff on Self-compassion. I believe that we have so much power to influence our environment and by learning ourselves, we connect better and we are more satisfied with our lives. As a person of color and one who has lived through a lot of terrible events, I am fortunate to been able to use the very same skills we will go over to turn my own life around.
Formal Training & Background: I have a M.A. degree in Counseling Psychology from the City University of Seattle. I also acquired a B.S. with a Psychology Major from Eastern Michigan University. I have extensive training in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and other Cognitive Behavioral Therapy with focuses in Neuroscience and Mindfulness. I have worked with a vast range of populations including different ethnicities, sexual identities, gender identities and mental health issues including identity, trauma recovery, and anxiety disorders.
