About Me

Greetings! I'm glad you found my page and well done for applying your energy to find some support.

My name is Brian and I have been a healing artist for two decades- not always as a Licensed Psychologist, but as a practitioner of hands-on complementary medicine. I lived through a couple times in my life where I had pretty bad social anxiety and one of those periods was when I was at college in my twenties. I developed symptoms in my body and thought that I had a medical disorder but after many tests the conclusion was that I had somatic anxiety symptoms- meaning my anxiety manifested in the body as very uncomfortable sensations. I turned towards complementary medicine, becoming a Yoga teacher and hands-on therapist who eventually specialized in helping people to discharge trauma from their bodies.

I went on to do my doctorate with a concentration in Somatic Psychology, where I could research more fully how people packed away stress and trauma in their bodies. So, I guess you could say I studied Psychological distress from the inside before I studied it “out there.” As a Clinical Psychologist I have a unique contribution in that I have a large arsenal of mind, body, and spirit tools to help you regulate stress and discover/deploy your inner and outer resources.

I am an eclectic therapist now and my ultimate goal is to forge a trusting collaboration with you. I have been around a multiplicity of different healing and therapeutic modalities and have found that the best strategy is to find out what approach works for each individual. Some like action-based modalities where they are supported in creating new behaviors through the clarification of- and working towards- pragmatic goals. Some like scientific explanations of the neurobiological foundations of psychology, trauma, relationships, and behavior. Others seek insight into the origins of their distress and believe that understanding the roots of patterns is important to therapy. Still others want a spiritual perspective in the background or foreground of therapy because they have lost a sense of living a meaningful life. Others yet enjoy reflecting on the comedic dimensions of life’s tragedies.

There is a very wide array of needs and because my experience has so much multiplicity to it, I am confident that we can efficiently collaborate to find an approach you believe in. Most find that a combination works best and that it is more about the collaboration than it is the method.
Whatever method is chosen, my hope is that we can enhance the way you creatively move through life. My joy is to see people blossom into what they are capable of, to help them develop the courage to be themselves and the capacities to be successful in life domains that have been troubling.

Dr. Tierney is the best! He truly listens and actually pinpoints out of the box ideas to help you best with your problems. Instead of the rigid rules for therapy. I have had years of therapy and none of sessions have been as helpful as Dr. Tierney’s. I have been working with him and would recommend him to others.
