Hello! My name is Diane Cleary. (pronouns she/her)
Welcome! You have taken the first step on the road to improve your life and your well-being. Congratulations. This is not always an easy thing to do and I know you may feel a bit uneasy about taking this step. I am here for you!!
I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with over 27 years of experience providing prevention, psychoeducation, individual and group therapy to adults, women, young people, children, and their families. Through my own unique experiences both in the field and personally, I have expertise on how trauma changes the brain and how emotional challenges affect the lives of the entire family. The good news is that the brain can be rewired to improve thoughts and feelings that can lead to improved mood and decreased anxiety!
First and foremost in my work is building a trusting, therapeutic and non-judgmental relationship. From this relationship, issues can be worked on using a variety of therapeutic techniques that I have learned over the years. For the first 7 years of my career, I worked with adolescents and young adults who were in the foster care system and resided in group homes. I also provided supervision and training to the staff. These youngsters had tremendous issues that they faced such as abuse and neglect, abandonment, loss, issues with substance abuse, depression and anxiety, and a variety of traumas. There, I learned how important a trusting therapeutic relationship can be. Providing a safe and trusting space to express oneself without fear of judgment is paramount to the therapeutic process. I still hear from these former clients from time to time who are now in their 30’s. It fills me with great pride and joy as they thank me for being there for them at such a crucial time in their lives.
I have also worked in a mental health clinic, as well as specializing in women's issues such as domestic violence and sexual assault/abuse. For the past 21 years, I have been a School Social Worker. I worked in an elementary school for two years, but have spent most of my career working with adolescents providing prevention, education, crisis intervention, and individual and group therapy to teens and their families. I have also provided parenting skills training as needed in those situations that required that intervention. I have particular expertise in dealing with crisis situations and trauma.
I have an eclectic approach to therapy and am a DBT informed therapist and a Trauma-informed therapist. I continue to attend continuing education workshops as often as I can to keep up to date on the latest treatment modalities. I incorporate mindfulness into my practice including strategies from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, DBT, Client-Centered Therapy, Psychodynamic therapy, solution-focused therapy, family systems theory, and more. I have experience in a wide variety of areas but have most often worked with depression and anxiety, trauma and abuse, crisis and self-harm issues, social skill issues, parenting issues, and substance use, I have also worked with issues of sexuality.
I honor my relationships with my clients and strive to provide a safe therapeutic environment. If you feel that I may be a good fit for you or for, please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions.
