I have a M.Ed. in Community Counseling earned in 2000 from the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in the State of Illinois. I was certified as a National Certified Counselor by the NBCC (National Board for Certified Counselors) in 2000. My area of special expertise is grief and loss. I have recently had a book published on my own theory of the grief process: "Loss and Growth: The Grief Spiral." You can find it on Amazon.com. It is available in both e-book and paperback formats, and soon it will be available as an audiobook.
My approach is called Humanistic, or Client-Centered Therapy. This is a philosophy of psychotherapy that takes a positive view of human nature and emphasizes the empowerment of the individual to find his or her own way toward healing and wholeness. Therapists in this tradition help clients realize their potential through change and self-directed growth. There are also Cognitive and Psychoeducational components to my approach, which means I focus on changing my clients’ perceptions so that they can make the changes they want, and on increasing my clients’ knowledge and information about themselves, about the context they are in, and about the grief process.
If it sounds like I would be your choice as a therapist, or if you have any questions before making that choice, I look forward to meeting you!

I've worked with Elissa for years and she works on your schedule and makes you feel comfortable. She always devises a larger strategic plan to work on issues and always has well grounded answers. The level of comfort she emits even in a digital space is unparalleled.
Elissa is VERY patient and thorough. She is more than a sounding board, she offers constructive exercises to do, in an effort to help me process memories.
She is timely with her responses - which is so appreciated.
She's very sincere. Very good at communication. Easy to talk to.
Great councilor! I highly recommend her to anybody, even if you don't think you're going through loss or grief. You'll be pleasantly surprised. I was.
Elissa has been very helpful to me. Her insight is invaluable and has really helped me get through some tough times.
I've just begun working with Elissa Bishop-Becker, but I'm impressed with the way she is able to help me start working through my issues. She is easy to talk to and extremely kind. I look forward to working with her more to solve the problems I'm having and feel like she is an excellent match to the type and kind of counselor I need.
Elissa Bishop-Becker has been such a tremendous source of help for me in a most difficult and trying time. Very open and caring and non-judgmental, positive, kind, thoughtful....these are all words that I believe characterize her. I would heartily recommend her to anyone who is facing their own personal struggles.
