About Me

Welcome. I use what is known as the Functional Approach from the early years of clinical Social Work, a blend of Humanistic and Existential views, informed by Rankian and systems theory, a smattering of depth psychology, and points of order re-purposed from the Men’s Movement and Stoic philosophy. A client-centered orientation as understood by Carl Rogers and Albert Ellis--a progenitor to cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) in the United States-- is crucial to explore how relationship to self and others impacts our physical and emotional health. From my experience working with families, couples, foster kids and runaway teens, victims of stroke and brain injury, schizophrenics and the homeless, sociopaths, alcoholics, and combat veterans, it helps to clarify role of environment as well as emotional material from past "imprints" in our efforts to find peace and purpose in our postmodern, sometimes oppressive world. My training in sustaining (support and reassurance) and ventilation procedures (active listening, attention to affect) respects the body-mind’s natural searching for homeostasis. This is often accomplished by a re-direction of our psychic energy through attention to the power of heart and soul. Meanwhile my wife, Laurie, and our rescue dog, Rocky, are building a new garden in the back yard; we read and exercise, play table tennis and 9-Ball, and connect with our daughters Jennifer and Samantha. Grandkids now live in Texas so we are planning trips to see them soon. Be good to yourself and stay safe, and be well.

James's experience and expertise was immediately clear from the start. He is knowledgeable without being condescending. He offers support and advice while still being relatable. The combination of these qualities isn't always easy to find in a counselor. Highly recommend.
