After more than 15 years of working as a mental health service provider, educator, and consultant one thing has become abundantly clear to me, the foundation for anyone wishing to truly thrive in life is connecting to your own unique sense of purpose. When we know our purpose, we begin to experience greater clarity about life’s decisions, we see more options, and we are more resilient. If you currently find yourself in a period of transition or transformation (i.e. entrepreneur, changing careers, transitions from high school to college, college to work, leaving a relationship, starting a new adventure, etc.) yet somehow stagnated or overcome by resistance, I am here to help. Our work will begin by taking the first steps towards clarifying your own statement of purpose. From this, we will begin to build out a map of possibilities that align with your dreams and hopes for the future. All along the way, I will not only be there to provide empathy and support, but I will also be there to challenge you and your thinking and to help connect you to knowledge and resources that will empower you on your path.
What is my purpose? I am most fulfilled in my life, when I am able to find creative ways to help people who are in a period of transition and/or transformation to connect to knowledge and resources that help them to achieve their goals.
In addition to my work in mental health and education (since 2003) I also work as an organizational development consultant and executive coach (since 2013). I have a PhD in educational psychology and a master’s degree in counseling psychology. I am a licensed (LMHC) in Hawaii and a nationally certified counselor (NCC). As an author, I have written numerous academic papers and two chapters on mentoring between family members that have appeared in international handbooks on mentoring. I am currently writing another chapter on mentoring in family owned businesses and working on a documentary series on the topic of legacy. I have lived in Hawaii since 1997 and have been an active member of the watersport community as a surfer, windsurfer, kitesurfer, and stand up surfer. My personal creative outlets include guitar and art with young son.
Author Steven Pressfield wrote that we encounter our greatest resistance when we are on the verge of our greatest growth. When we being to see this resistance as an indicator of great things, we can begin to move past it.

Dr. Nunes was super helpful in helping me work through several problems going on in my life
Joseph and I have had a 4 month counseling relationship during which he has helped me overcome a significant personal setback. He’s very scientific and fact-based in his approach to therapy, yet extremely understanding and empathetic. I’d never had any experience with therapy before and had reservations about it, but my view on this subject has changed completely during this period. I’d definitely recommend him.
