About Me

Welcome to Betterhelp. I am Lon T. Clark, PhD, and I have been practicing psychotherapy as a licensed therapist for the past 30 years in Dallas, TX and Northern California. For the past 15 years I have served National University (www.nu.edu) as a classroom and online professor in the bachelor and master level psychology departments. Last, for the past few years I have lived abroad as an expat in China and Germany. I have advanced expertise, due to my education and experience, in cross cultural issues. Thus, I have been able to help many people who struggle with the challenges of moving to a new city, state, or country.

I believe strongly that each of us have the potential to resolve old issues and current problems, and to live the life we want and were meant to live ... a life of healthy connectedness with ourselves and others. You have taken the first courageous step in seeking help for issues that are weighing heavily on you. Chances are you have tried everything you know to resolve your struggles, with little or no long-lasting results. Many times our best efforts result in only placing a band aid on a deep wound, and the problem always returns after a few days or a few weeks.

My goal in working together is two-fold. In the beginning, my style combines empathy with a solution-based approach. The first step is to help you to get some relief and sense of closure regarding strong emotions, to ease symptoms you may be having, and to give you hope that you can lead the kind of life you wish. As soon as possible we will identify what the main issues are, and set realistic goals. On the longer term, and coming from a depth or soul orientation, I hope that we can get to the bottom of the feelings, concerns and dilemmas that your life situation has raised. I strive to create a safe environment for you to tell me your story.

I have advanced expertise in the following areas: cross cultural diversity, relationship problems, separation and divorce, grief and loss, male issues, gender issues, spiritual development, crisis intervention, phase of life transitions, sexual orientation, and codependence.

I like what Carl Jung said about psychotherapy: "Your vision will become clear only when you can look into your own heart. Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakes." Our work together will be a journey in which we will continually seek to look inward and into your own heart, to awaken you to your full potential, and to help you first be intimately connected with yourself so you may then be connected to others in a powerful and meaningful way.

I look forward to our journey together.

Dr. Clark has given me faith in people and their goodness. I have made more progress in our short amount of time alone in comparison to eight years of face-to-face counseling. The brilliance he exudes is priceless. Thank you, Dr. C.

Written by R.A on Apr 22, 2016 after counseling with Lon for 1 month on issues concerning stress, anxiety, relationship, family, intimacy-related, and depression

I found Betterhelp online when I was considering seeing a counsellor because I had a whole bunch of emotions and some relationship issues I needed to work through but really didn't think sitting in a counselling session for just 1 hour a week would help me. I wanted to be able to process things in my own time and whenever stuff came up that I needed to discuss and have help with.

Dr. Clark was the perfect fit for me in the situation - he was empathetic, kind and patient with me and gave me plenty of things to think about in order to reassess my situation from a healthy outside perspective.

In a very short amount of time I was able to see things from a completely different perspective and see the issues I needed to deal with clearly because of his help.

He is a great counsellor and I would recommend him to anyone needing a kind and understanding voice in their lives.

Dr. Clark has an insight into my experience at the moment that has cut through my present suffering and given me hope. He gives clear, concise and thoughtful replies mixed with questions to spur further introspection. Within a few exchanges with him, I could feel his compassion for me, and felt freer than I had in a long time. I really appreciate him and would recommend Dr. Clark without reservation.

Written by G.A on May 15, 2015 after counseling with Lon for 16 months on issues concerning family, and parenting

I have had Dr Clark as my therapist for a while now. WOW what a difference he has made in my life. I have gone through some of the toughest times, through my marriage heading towards divorce (we were separated and now we are now doing fantastic) and my son going through addiction. Dr Clark has coached me through every step of the way. He has helped me see things in and entirely new light (reality!). I'm getting more and more confidence every day. I no longer have anxiety, I can't even remember my last panic attack. I face situations what used to terrify me and now laugh at them. I can now recognize issues and patterns in others and adapt to meet them where they are. This has lead to so much more success in my life. And I have this happiness and joy that I have never felt before, I no longer have the weight of the world on my shoulders. Dr Clark has shown me that I only have to only carry the burdens that I choose to carry and that has made such a difference in my life.

Dr. Clark is absolutely wonderful. We have only been e-mailing a short time, but he has helped me already. He really cares about getting to the root of the problem, and he is caring and kind...this comes through loud and clear in his e-mails. I am very, very fortunate that Dr. Clark is my counselor. Dr. Clark, if you see this, I would like to say thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Written by J.O on Sep 30, 2014 after counseling with Lon for 27 months on issues concerning stress, anxiety, lgbt, relationship, and depression

Dr Clark is a caring, competent and compassionate man. I resonate particularly with his appreciation of the importance of the symbols of meaning that we encounter as we move through our individual and collective lives, . His mind is
large and equaled by his heart., He listens well, and reads what is written behind the words.

For all of this Lon Clark is a practical man. He understands and cares about the struggles of everyday life. He is a man of experience who has lived a full and interesting life. He has gleaned from this its lessons and when helpful shares now and then a related story taken from his own life.

I am pleased and frankly surprised that the depth of relationship that we enjoy was made possible within the limits of written correspondence.

Written by A.N on Jun 26, 2014 after counseling with Lon for 30 months

Dr. Clark was a positive component of my healing journey. He was very patient and compassionate with me, even as I rambled in negativity. Dr. Clark served as a pen pal/ confidant with who I shared never-told secrets. He made me feel heard and within a month, I became more self-aware and realized that the tools I needed for long-term betterment, in my case, were in me all along.

Written by V.A on May 29, 2014 after counseling with Lon for 31 months

Dr. Clark guided in a path of autodiscovery. He doesn't give you a life manual, he helps you to realize about your own motivations, fears, the origin of your thoughts and obsessions. I managed to raise my confidence to levels I never imagined, in only one month.

Written by S.A on May 13, 2014 after counseling with Lon for 31 months

Dr. Clark is awesome! I like that he gets straight to the point of the work that needs to be done while acknowledging that your thoughts and feelings are valid.

Written by L.E on Apr 09, 2014 after counseling with Lon for 32 months

I respectfully reserve judgement at the moment. I tend to be a results-oriented person and I came to this therapy looking for some tools, or some prompting, or some perspective that would result in, if not immediate, then pretty quick change for the better. That may be unfair but it would color any assessment I would make of this therapy so far. I will say that Dr. Clark has been a very positive addition to my process; he is a very pleasant presence who is measured and thoughtful and full of ideas; he refers me to materials for further research and seems genuinely interested in my well-being.

Written by J.A on Apr 08, 2014 after counseling with Lon for 32 months

Dr. Clark is a very caring and insightful therapist who knows how to ask the right questions in a non-invasive way and really help you reflect on yourself in a thoughtful way. I was skeptical about written therapy at first but now realize how valuable it can be to have a pen-pal that you can expound to who will help you work through things.

Dr. Clark is a fabulous therapist. Never would I have imagined feeling so much more alive after 2 months therapy. I couldn’t untangle my life by myself. Dr. Clark was able to compassionately guide me through my struggles, really sense what I’m feeling, and give me eye-opening explanations to the issues I never thought I’d understand. My experience with Dr. Clark was inspiring, and motivating, and utterly life-changing. I would recommend him to absolutely anybody feeling hopeless, stuck in past experiences, or just unable to move forward in their life. Here’s to change, and here’s to your future. Thank you Dr. Clark!
