Hello, and thank you for stopping in! My name is Dr. Shiquina Andrews. I'm a Licensed Psychologist in the State of Texas. I obtained my PhD in Medical/Clinical Psychology. Accordingly, much of my work has been helping people with various chronic health concerns (e.g., pain, HIV, diabetes, organ failure, infertility, etc.) cope better with their condition and/or make changes to improve their health. However, I also more generally work with people on improving stress, reducing depression, improving interpersonal skills/relationships, increasing motivation for change, and increasing their general personal awareness and self-confidence.
My therapeutic approach is rooted in cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). CBT has been proven an effective intervention modality for a host of emotional and medical concerns... but that's not (just) why I love it. CBT resonates with me on a personal and professional level, in that it highlights the power of our core beliefs and perspectives, as well as challenges us to determine where we obtained those schema from and if they are still serving us. If they no longer serve us, CBT offers tools to change those unhelpful perspectives. Though CBT is my foundation, I use other therapeutic approaches - including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Motivational Interviewing - as they "fit" for the person and their concerns. In other words, I tend not to force things where they don't fit and welcome feedback on the helpfulness (or not) of a particular approach. Finally, I believe in the importance and impact of intersectional identity (i.e., the interplay of our race/ethnicity, gender & sexual identities, religious/spiritual background, class, etc.) on one's life experiences, and thus take a multicultural approach to therapy.
Lastly, my "style" can be described as empathetic, yet honest. I ultimately want to make sure that therapy is a rich, worthwhile experience, thus I encourage transparency in order to facilitate growth. I'm client-centered, in that I encourage my clients to set the pace, determine their goals, and amend those as needed. I hope to help support and empower you on your journey towards your goals.
