I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and a Certified Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CAADC) in the state of Michigan. I have dual master's degrees from the University of the Cumberlands. As a therapist, my goal is to assist my clients in working through issues that negatively affect them in their daily lives. I have experience working with a variety of clients with many different issues.
I have extensive experience working with clients on a myriad of issues, including but not limited to ADHD, trauma, substance abuse/addiction, sexual/behavioral addictions, depression, anxiety, and lack of motivation. I have worked with clients with a wide range of concerns including depression, anxiety, relationship issues, parenting problems, career challenges, OCD and ADHD. I also helped many people who have experienced physical trauma or emotional abuse. I am divorced but was married for over thirty-five years, raising two sons and four step-children, so I think that I may know a little about families, both biological and blended.
I use an integrative approach to therapy, using various techniques including cognitive behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing, positive psychology, solution-focused therapy, person-centered therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy informed, psychoeducation, gestalt, and existential therapies as well. Steven is a wonderful therapist with loads of expertise and different approaches to suit your needs. He really helped me deal with my anxiety and emotional trauma, and was always there to support me in my journey back to health. After having worked with him, I have a much greater understanding of how to handle the issues I deal with, where they come from, and what the path to health looks like.
i don’t know how to explain it but this man is going to change my life. it’s ironic and astounding because i’m a lesbian and we’ve only had two sessions. he’s smart. maybe the smartest person i know smart. if, you’re ready to start living your life, go to this man. i’m just at the beginning but i have high hopes for the months to come!
I almost lost my faith in therapy altogether after meeting with at least 6 other doctors (most of them outside of Betterhelp). Steven knew how to approach my challenges and truly listened to my concerns. Every conversation with him feels honest, encouraging, and eye-opening. The best part is Steve makes me feel like I'm part of the process, and not just a monkey following orders. I truly appreciate his help.
I just finished my last therapy session with Steven after two months. And I'm glad to say that he has helped me a lot.
The methods he used are evidence-based and solution-oriented, but he gave a warm personal touch to our sessions to make me feel at ease.
It turned out that the therapy he chose for me was working tremendously well and it fit my personality perfectly. The exercises he gave me were fun but gave me valuable insights. In the end I overcame traumas that haunted me for over 30 years.
Thank you, Steven!
I can honestly say that Steve is an incredible human being, phenomenal intellect, and compassionate therapist. I feel very confident in my path toward recovery because of him.
I feel comfortable with I am speaking with him . And I believe he is can navigate me to resolve all my anxiety issues
Steve is a great guy, I think he's a down to earth, level-headed guy with a great sense of humor. I'm looking forward to working with him further.
Steve has been great so far. His straight forward approach and honest comments make me want to continue to work with him for the foreseeable future.
Thanks for all your help in guiding me to face my fears and walk through my anxiety. Steve is really good and kind. I would definitely recommend him to my friends or whoever needs help.
Steve is wonderful. Very kind
Excellent and extremely intelligent man with a true calling for his craft.
I have had only two sessions with Steven so far, however, I felt so much better after talking with him each time. He has provided me with tools and greater insight into my condition, which has afforded me the hope that one day I will get better. I look forward to continuing my journey towards healing, with Steven's guidance and support.
Steve is a wonderful therapist. He really finds very unique and specific ways to relate to me.
I absolutely love and adore him so much. He has helped me cope with my addiction and stress problems in so many different ways. Even though it's been over the phone or online this entire time and states away, he makes me feel like he is sitting right in front of me talking to me like I'm a real person. There's so many more things I could say about Steven in a positive manner but that would take me another paragraph or two. He is probably the best counselor I have ever come across and he listens to everything, with a very neutral understanding. He does not make me feel pressured to do certain things by a certain time he works on my schedule,, the only down part is no immediate text back and forth but he DOES respond as soon as he possibly can and is always willing to do a light session unscheduled. I will recommend Steven to everybody I ever have ever known seeking help. We have barely scratched the surface together, honestly. But he knows me better already then most of my closest friends / or family.
Great tools so far to use for my everyday stressors
Steve understands me a way that few others do. In addition to all his degrees and understand, he’s also just plain enjoyable to talk to. He’s a therapist for a very specific type, but, for me, he’s exactly what I need at this point in my life.
I came to Better Help having recently been dumped and made redundant from my job within a few weeks of each other. I was anxious about how my life was going to turn out and could not see a light at the end of the tunnel.
When I was matched up with Steven Berman I immediately felt a little more at ease and that he was shining a light down the tunnel for me to walk towards. From our first session, he gave me techniques to manage anxiety and work through the emotions I was feeling. He made me realise that the power to change my life was within me and helped me to find that power by giving me tools to examine my past worries objectively and others to make me a better person than I was by using failures as lessons.
Even though we are thousands of miles away from each other, it felt like I was having conversations with a close friend. I could tell him anything without any worry of judgement and I was able to learn and understand that our failures do not define us, how we react to them does.
"Growth comes through discomfort" is one of the first phrases Steve told me and it is something I will take with me for the rest of my life. It is a phrase I have passed onto other friends who are struggling and become a mantra for me when I begin to feel down.
In the three months I worked with Steve, I was able to come to terms with my break-up and find a new job. He does not mince words and is able to get to the root of an issue quickly while giving you as much time as you need to talk through your emotions. His solution-focused brief therapy was exactly what I needed at an emotional point in my life and I will always be thankful to him for what he has done for me.
Steven has been a great help so far. I’m confident in his qualifications and style of therapy. Looking forward to this journey with him.
Steve is clearly extremely knowledgeable and I appreciate that he has continued to learn and update his practice to incorporate the techniques that he sees work the best. He is not intimidating at all and I enjoy working with him.
It's very short timeframe to comment on an overall success as such, but initial conversations have gone well and it makes me eager to progress and learn
100% helpful in trying to get me to a better place.
I’m very pleased with how my sessions have begun.
Steve offers me a different outlook by way of talking through things that I’ve never considered. He’s helped me to work through things that subconsciously I now realize I was pretending didn’t effect my everyday attitude and general well-being. Speaking to him is like having a weight lifted off of my shoulders. I’m thankful to have been matched with a counsellor who’s personality matches mine, allowing me to feel comfortable expressing myself.
I not only found a therapist in Steve, but also a kindred spirit. I can not praise him enough. He is the right person with the right knowledge and life experiences to truly understand what I am going through. Speaking with Steve is like talking to an old friend.
