Hello! My name is Thomas Kaufman, and I am an LPC working out of Madison, WI. For the past 20 years, I have worked with families, couples, adults, and adolescents. Using cognitive-behavioral theory with narrative techniques, I help empower clients to explore areas within their lives that present challenges and inhibit change, and assist them with finding solutions that will work for them. However, I also believe that the therapeutic relationship is a vital component within any program, which means that I believe that any work needs to be collaborative between myself and my clients. I am certified to deliver trauma-focused treatments as well as providing services to help manage stress and anxiety.
Additional areas of focus: Addictions, LGBT, Family conflicts, Grief, Intimacy-related issues, Parenting issues, Anger management, Career difficulties, Bipolar disorder, Depression, Coaching, Compassion fatigue, ADHD, Attachment Issues, Blended Family Issues, Communication Problems, Coping with Natural or Human-Caused Disaster, Divorce and Separation, Family Problems, Fatherhood Issues, Forgiveness, Men's Issues, Post-traumatic Stress

Thomas is an excellent therapist. After 2 years of pandemic lockdowns I became quite isolated and disconnected. He helped me get out of my head and reconnect with others. Along the way I worked through issues stemming from intense childhood trauma, and figured out how to live in the present with far less anxiety than I had before our sessions began. The best part is that Thomas is non-judgmental and it never feels like he's giving you orders. Instead he helps plant seeds. He asks you questions that get your brain going. Ultimately this leads you to find the answers yourself, and figure out what steps you can take to achieve your goals. From there it is up to you to put in the work. Each week it felt like I was taking baby steps in the right direction. It didn't take long for small victories to become big ones. Rather than focusing solely on psychological concepts, Thomas also brings in narratives, metaphors, and archetypes to help guide you through the process. Instead of going through life as a victim you can become the hero in your own story. After 3 months of sessions my quality of life has drastically improved. The difference is night and day. If you have a chance to work with Thomas I highly recommend it!

Thomas is very good and thinking outside of the box to get me to be able to view things in a way I hadn't before. I appreciate that.
