First, let me assure you that reaching out for help is one of the most courageous and insight-driven steps that any person can take in their life, despite how fearful and confusing it may seem; I admire you for making it this far.
My name is TJ McDowell and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor practicing both online and in-person in the state of Pennsylvania. I have worked in behavioral and mental health now for over 8 years in a variety of settings and different roles, with the last several years of experience focused mainly in individual therapy. I have developed proficiency in theories including Existential & Person-Centered counseling as well as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy techniques and an expertise in Motivational Interviewing.
I believe in the human heart's and mind's abilities to heal themselves through meaningful, reflective, and validating conversation; though I also understand there is a time to pick up a pen and do the realistic work of setting goals and solving practical problems. It is my experience that most satisfying counseling experiences are typically a dynamic blend of both of these styles of approach. In our working relationship, you will have the freedom to guide and decide what's best for you.
Let me offer a quick glimpse into what inspires me:
As someone who does not ascribe to a particular faith, many are surprised to hear that my credentials come from a Pastoral Care and Counseling degree. I am personally and professionally fascinated by the ways that we as humans integrate into our lives that which is most precious and meaningful. Regardless of affiliation with a religious faith or a total lack thereof, I believe that as humans it is an essential part of our growth and personal fulfillment to embrace those things which some may call "spiritual." For example- my bachelor's degree is in Physics, and a deep reverence for the natural world and universe is something I carry with me in daily life. In this sense, when I look at pictures of Saturn and its rings & moons that I took with a telescope back then, I am filled with a sense of wonder and connection to something bigger than myself.
Let me just reiterate how impressive it is that you have made it this far. Counseling can be brief and solution focused, longer and more existential & creative, or a place to go when you don't know what you want but you just have a vague sense that something about life isn't right. I have worked with many people in all of these stages of searching for help, and I am confident that I can be of service to you in your journey and look forward to getting to know you.

TJ McDowell is an excellent therapist and counsellor. I am truly grateful that I have the opportunity to be his client.
He is attentive, he listens carefully and he reads messages thoroughly. He truly tries to get to the root of an issue, comment, or topic and succeeds 100% of the time in finding the cause.
He has a very kind demeanour and he is truly professional in his work. He diligently asks questions to his client and shows that he actually cares and wants to help. Furthermore, he provides truly insightful knowledge and counsel.
He provides many options for communication, whether it is through messaging or through call or video sessions. What I appreciate the most is that he offered these options from the get-go, rather than waiting for the client to ask. This reflects another pair of his great qualities: he is proactive and invested in his work.
I can easily 100% recommend TJ McDowell as a therapist and counsellor.
TJ is a great listener and allows our sessions to go off toward whatever is going on in my life but also brings it back around to my main goals. Super helpful as a guide :)
So far I have had two sessions with TJ, I feel he understands me and my needs, I am very confident he has the expertise and tools to help me with managing my mental disorder.
Very very good at understanding and gently pushing me to be the best I can be
He's a grate counselor and has a grate amount of creative and good ideas, he's understandble and a greate help.
it was a pleasurre talking to him.
TJ is an amazing listener and I always felt really comfortable talking to him. I was scared to open up to someone and talk about my thoughts and experiences but TJ took that fear away from me, since I never felt any judgement from him and always felt like he actually understood me.
TJ is the best.
I’ve only had 3 sessions so far, but I feel so much better and lighter. He’s super supportive and a great listener, also offering great advice and tactics to overcome my challenges. Also love the app and it’s practicality of matching with a great therapist in a convenient way.
Y'know, I had some doubts going into therapy at all at first, but I wanted to at least try something to better myself. With TJ's help, I feel like I'm actually, finally making progress towards it, bit by bit. He's been amazingly patient and respectful so far, and I appreciate his advice through and through. It's been good so far. Here's to its continuation. *Raises imaginary wine glass*
I am an extremely guarded person in terms of being able to trusting someone enough to share experiences and thoughts but I definitely feel like I can do that with TJ. I am only just starting therapy but I have been able to talk about some of the difficult experiences and as long as I have the support, I definitely can make significant progress.
TJ is extremely helpful and understanding!
TJ has been very easy to talk to and I don't feel any judgment from him which was a concern I initially had but the more I speak to TJ the more I feel like I actually have someone to talk who isn't bias and has a genuine interest in helping people who could use an ear and some guidance.
He really listens and listens to what I'm saying and is so intuitive in knowing how I'm feeling and even asks the tough questions that helps me be more reflective.
TJ is a kind and caring support who I am very greatful for. He ‘gets’ my problems whilst listening in a non-judgmental way whilst offering sage advice. I would very much recommend him.
TJ is a very down to earth individual who respects you and talks to you with zero judgement. He makes for a comfortable environment for you to be honest and open.
