You can learn to establish new ways of thinking, new behaviors, and an improved sense of direction. Your unique situation deserves to be explored as you experience it. Trouble, chaos, regret, difficulty, trial, cheating, worry, doubt, sadness, and a feeling of brokenness, can all eventually lead to a feelings of powerlessness. Things can improve, there is hope, and I want to join you in your journey toward that improvement. During the counseling process, I desire to walk beside every person who chooses to visit with me. I strive to create a caring and supportive environment where anyone in need of counseling can sit with a mental health professional and regain a sense of control in their lives. Every relationship, every emotion, and every story you are a part of matters – every life is important. I want to help you reflect on your life events and to help you gain perspective, escape lies, embrace your inner truth, experience joy, and discover or rediscover purpose in your life. I have had two careers which run concurrently: many years as a parish pastor and at the same time a mental health counselor. I am strongly invested in the LGBTQ issues because of my transgender grandson's amazing journey. As a hospice chaplain, I have provided bereavement support counseling to families. As a divorce mediator employing dispute management skills, I have guided couples in making parenting decisions that are in the best interests of their children. My passion is not to be a sage on the stage but a guide by the side with individuals and couples seeking solutions that are practical. I have expertise in cognitive -behavioral counseling, rational emotive psychotherapy, anger management (especially with men who abuse), and Life Work Planning and Career Development. I have modest experience with Ericksonian Hypnotherapy and Healing Story Telling. I endeavor to blend theory and practice, while affirming growth and risk-taking. I am a non-judgmental listener. I employ humor and unconditional support routinely to neutralize resistance to change. I am old fashioned person who still believes in unconditional positive regard and seeking a truth that sets people free.

Laurie Stricker
I completed my Master of Social Work degree in April of 1998 while working full-time . I had begun volunteering at a domestic violence shelter and was looking at methods for helping these at -risk families. My first job post Master's degree was working in the foster care system. That led me to a better understanding of child welfare, family dynamics, and the legal system. I then moved back to my hometown in northeast Michigan to work as an infant mental health specialist. This opportunity gave me more skill in working with trauma, family therapy, and being comfortable in the client's own home. My work at the local hospital's behavioral health services expanded my ability to provide individual psychotherapy to people of all ages and background. I also developed proficiancy in working with in-patient units for substance abuse and mental illness. during my employment there. My move to the VA was a wonderful journey and extremely educational. At this point in my life I feel that my knowledge, background, and skills has made me a well rounded therapist. I am comfortable utilizing different modalities with a variety of clients.
