Relationship issuesFamily conflicts
8 years of experience as a mental health therapist

Chuck specializes in working with relationships and family conflict, including blended family, money, intimacy, and communication issues. He finds working with distressed couples especially rewarding. As a veteran of the United States Air Force, Chuck understands the stressors military and dependents face. He is also familiar with the law enforcement community. In addition to a Master’s in Marriage, Family & Child Counseling, Chuck holds a Master’s in Business Administration, which helps when working with the “business side” of marriage & family. Chuck uses a curriculum that he developed over time designed to facilitate communication (exchanging listening and respect), understand differences, meet needs, identify strengths, define roles, build intimacy, resolve conflict, and set boundaries with internal and external threats to the relationship(s). Given the stressors couples face today (technology, social media, etc.) as never before, managing these threats has become essential to “tipping the scale” in favor of marriage. He will almost always assign homework. Chuck requires that at least the first session be conducted via videoconferencing, and may want to continue that modality until the “therapist-client relationship” has been established, per telehealth best practices. As a family-systems therapist, Chuck enjoys having the whole family present for the first session whenever possible. He likes to learn all the members, their roles in the family system and the family story. He has found that generational legacies can be very powerful. Chuck believes that we must be the authors of our own stories and choose our paths. Many people instinctively know the path that they want to be on, but are stuck in maladaptive patterns rooted in the past. As a counselor, Chuck is more directive than most and uses Milan Systemic theory as a framework. As a first step he will ask you to fill in the blank “The problem that I’m having in my (family, life, relationship, etc.) is…” The more brief and specific you can be in this “problem statement” the more likely you and Chuck will be to resolve that problem. Next, you and Chuck will write a “better statement.” Again filling in the blank “The problem will be better when…” As with the problem statement, the more brief and specific you can be, the more likely you will be to resolve the problem. As insight is gained and progress made toward the “better,” the problem and better statements are refined as a work-in-progress. Chuck incorporates “mindfulness” from Dialectal Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and lessons learned from practicing yoga into his work. Mindfulness teaches observing emotions as a scientist observes phenomena in nature without judgment, and living in the moment. Chuck was married for 29 years, divorced, and is now engaged to the woman of his dreams. So, he can probably relate to whatever you (and your family) are going through. As a blended family-to-be, they have a 28 year-old son who served in the United States Navy, and is currently living on the east coast. Chuck has a four year-old son in heaven, giving him the empathy for those who have suffered a loss, which can only come from personal experience. Chuck holds a Master’s degree in Marriage, Family & Child Counseling from the University of San Diego, and is independently licensed as an LPC in Colorado (2400), and in Texas (77267). He is also licensed as an LPCC in New Mexico (0734). Currently, Chuck’s “office” day for Telehealth Video sessions is on Tuesdays from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, only. He can respond to Messaging on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, only. Chuck does not use Chat or Phone.

11 years of experience as a mental health therapist

I am licensed as a clinical mental health counselor in New Mexico and Florida with over 10 years of clinical and supervisory experience. I began my counseling career in 1991 but soon left to pursue a career in the software industry. After that I underwent a 10-year period of training in Buddhist meditation and practice, before returning to counseling work. This period of training has helped me to focus on the essentials, which have to do with learning how to live in the present, accept life as it is, and find the hidden joy here. Sometimes it can help to let go, at least a little, of who you think you are and what you think you know—with all the problems those ideas often entail. This is easier said than done of course, and often we have traumatic memories, chronic pain or chronic patterns of thinking that keep us feeling trapped in a loop. I see my work as helping you shift out of whatever painful loop you’re in and to broaden your vision of life. Working on yourself takes courage, curiosity, and a willingness to grow in compassion for yourself and others. So I respect this move you're making! What you get with me is a person who will respect and listen to you, and will be looking for ways to support and accompany you on your goals. By connecting with me, you connect to my feelings and views about your situation, which often will mean that I’ll be noticing strengths and goodness that you might be missing. But it is your life and your situation, and you are in the driver’s seat regarding your life. Some specific areas I like to work on with people include: • Psychoeducation regarding how the nervous system functions to help you understand and befriend your own body; • Psychoeducation regarding how the mind functions, so that you find harmony between the different sides of yourself; • Deepening religious/spiritual understanding and the spiritual path, including learning meditative life skills; • Living through existential crises and finding new meaning; • Getting over panic attacks for good; • Healing chronic pain (through Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT); and • Resolving traumatic memories using The Flash Technique. If this sounds promising, I'd be happy to meet with you.

How to find a therapist for counseling in Mesilla

Finding the best therapist close by in Mesilla can feel challenging, but know that once you narrow your search for a counselor serving your area, you can find a therapist in your city that is accepting new clients and fits your goals. Whether you're struggling with depression, anxiety, marriage, family issues, or other emotional challenges, feel proud that you have begun your search to find the mental health care services in Mesilla that work best for you in order to begin your personal journey towards emotional healing with a therapist.

Understanding the type of therapy you'd like to search for is crucial before finding a therapist or psychologist in Mesilla. Perhaps you're interested in narrowing your search for a psychotherapist that can offer psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), talk therapy, provide group therapy, marriage and family therapy for individuals or couples, or couples therapy. Each type of therapy can offer various benefits and address or treat different disorders. If you're still unsure or are new to counseling in Mesilla, feel free to contact the provider via email to find out which methods they practice.

It is also important to understand that mental health professionals in the United States are accredited to provide care, helping individuals and couples, with a variety of licenses. These include licensed marriage and family therapist (LMFT), licensed clinical social worker (LCSW), and clinical psychologist or doctor of psychology (PsyD). Regardless of their licensure, they are trained to treat individuals and couples counseling, and sometimes children, in any type of therapy in the Mesilla region and in the state of New Mexico. Find a therapist under any of these distinctions and know that the sessions they offer can provide a safe place to heal.

A mental health counselor working through their own in-person therapy practice in Mesilla or online may assist clients in improving healthy relationships, communication skills, working through life transitions, couples counseling, managing a mood disorder, improving coping skills, self help tips, offer life coaching, family therapy, or change in negative thinking patterns. A therapist may also provide a safe place and validation for clients experiencing emotional pain, or that simply want a psychological assessment. Verified providers can provide licensed marriage and couples therapy, tailor to individual needs, and create a therapeutic relationship as a National Certified Counselor.

There are all kinds of therapists working with clients today across the United States and in the greater Mesilla area in different types of therapy, including:

  • CBT
  • DBT
  • Substance use therapy
  • Couples therapy

When you're ready to start your search and find Mesilla therapists, have in mind what type of therapy you'd like your provider to be most experienced with and choose an experienced provider with a practice located near you in the city of Mesilla, elsewhere in Doña Ana, or in the greater state of New Mexico.

How do I know if online counseling is right for my family in Mesilla?

One of the potentially rewarding aspects of working with a Mesilla therapist is the validation and active listening they can provide. Your friends and loved ones may also be available to listen, but you may feel that they may lack the skills to provide objective guidance. Counselors are trained to respond to various concerns, symptoms, and mental health conditions.

Mesilla therapists in your city can support you toward a healthier emotional state, regardless of your mental health, life concerns, or healing needs. While supporting individuals in developing healthier habits, another good benefit of Mesilla therapy is having an understanding, safe space with a non-judgmental party who can support you through challenging experiences.

Many people have sensitive topics that they may feel ashamed to discuss with their friends or partner. A Mesilla therapist can help you confront these concerns and open up through unique methods of support. There are also many types of therapy, such as art therapy, where you may find you can express yourself through creativity instead of words with a psychotherapist.

With a lot of people in NM, therapists may be booked out with clients. Through the list of profiles above and others within BetterHelp's team, you may be able to find a psychologist within 24 to 48 hours. If you're searching to find a a nearby psychotherapist close to 88046 or the surrounding zip codes, consider others available through the BetterHelp site. No matter if you are seeking help from therapists in your area or beyond, online therapy can be a great option.

How should I prepare for my first therapy session with a Mesilla counselor?

Before seeing your Mesilla therapist, prep for your session by reading to understand the therapy process. You might write a list of questions you want to ask your psychotherapist, any emotional pain you may feel, and the ways in which you hope to improve. When you attend your session, let them know if you have any concerns about therapy or feel unsure about what to talk about. They may help guide you with open-ended therapeutic questions while offering mental health services. The first session will often serve as an intake to get to know you as a person and learn why you're attending therapy in Mesilla.

Should I find a therapist or psychologist for therapy if I feel fine?

Some simply don't feel the need to see a psychologist. However, some people may avoid attending therapy due to stigma or preconceived notions of what therapy entails. Although psychologists often support people with mental health conditions, you do not need a diagnosis or condition to attend therapy. You can discuss grief, relationship concerns, stress, or life changes and ask for general feedback and advice from a therapist. A Mesilla licensed clinical social worker may help you gain power over your life and emotions while you navigate day-to-day experiences.

Gaining a new perspective on yourself through various therapies might allow you to improve your self-esteem, work through relationships, and gain a better sense of your mental health goals. The success you may find through therapy with a Mesilla counselor can be dependent on your process.

People may also attend therapy for specific motives, such as bullying, an autism diagnosis, a desire to learn mindfulness meditation, personality concerns, trouble with office workers, specific phobias, and many other principles that a counselor can help with.

Is mental health care and therapy with a therapist worth it?

Therapy with a licensed counselor is effective and has the power to change individuals' lives. Each client is at a different stage of their emotional healing journey in life, as each human can be unique in their personality, expression, skills, and goals. A psychologist can target various symptoms, experiences, and personalities to help you feel your best and put you on the path to healing. Unlike advice from a friend, family, or non-professional, a mental health therapist has an understanding of various disorders like ADHD and depression with many hours of experience in treating adults in their practice. For this reason, seeing an evidence based psychologist in Mesilla, New Mexico can be worth it. Over 41 million adults in the US attend therapy services each year, showing it's a popular option and is proven to be effective.

Mesilla has many clinicians who practice person or client-centered individual therapy in-person and through online therapy to assist clients in their healing journey. If you opt into online therapy, you might also be able to meet with providers all over the United States and change therapists easily at any time. Many people struggling with anxiety and depression, substance abuse, body image issues, and more find therapists that are a good fit for them, feel supported, and gain further insight into their lives through internet-based therapy.

Do therapists judge you in therapy sessions during telehealth appointments?

The boundaries between you and a therapist are in place to help you and them regarding ethical concerns. Mental health professionals are held by ethical standards through the American Psychological Association (APA) and are not allowed to judge or harm their clients. If you are concerned about sharing details about yourself, feel free to withhold personal information. Their job in the therapeutic relationship is to create a safe place, help you gain a deeper understanding of your mental health, and support you. You might consider changing counselors if you don't feel safe or respected.
