Erin Mercer
Hello! I'm Erin Mercer and I would be happy to help you in whatever area of your life that brought you to Better Help. First, let me tell you a little bit about myself, so that you can see if I am the right fit for you. I am a LPC (Licensed Professional Counselor) and also have a MA in Counseling from Wayne State University and have a NT (School Counseling) certification in Michigan. Credentials aside, I have always had a knack for helping others work through their issues. I began my career teaching, but soon realized that helping both students and their parents with the social/emotional aspect of school was where I felt my strengths were, so I went back to get the credentials needed to do what I love doing. In my personal life and in counseling sessions, I am the go-to person if you want someone who is down-to-earth and warm so that you feel comfortable sharing whatever is troubling you. I have experience counseling in areas such as relationships (family, friends and couples), anxiety/depression, stress, life changes and parenting. First and foremost, I do take a person-centered approach to counseling. This means that during sessions, I will be genuine and honest with my feelings, so that clients will feel comfortable doing the same. I also will create a positive environment of unconditional support and understanding so that clients can grow in their own self-awareness. I also use techniques from various theories depending on what an individual client would like to accomplish during sessions. These techniques are nothing to be nervous about; just maybe some journaling, role playing an upcoming difficult situation or a little "homework" of something small to try before the next session. Just remember that my main goal is for you to be comfortable throughout the counseling journey.

Greetings! I am a certified counselor who works with clients on issues such as communication, control, relationships with self and others, planning and decision-making, self-esteem, coping with changes, and substance abuse. I'm person-centered in my style . I respect my clients and they determine what topics we cover in therapy and how deeply they want to delve into their issues. No matter who you are or where you've been in life, you are important. Your thoughts, feelings and beliefs are valuable guides in the therapeutic process and I am here to help you and support you. I draw from treatment models such as strengths-based, solution focused lens where my clients and I work together to develop a treatment plan that accomplishes my clients goals. Through cognitive-behavioral therapy I assist clients in exploring relationships between, thoughts, feelings and behaviors. Through CBT, clients reveal the dysfunctional thoughts that lead to self-destructive behaviors and beliefs. I support clients as they try new communication styles, coping mechanisms, mindfulness work, and emotional regulation. Clients can practice how they address issues with loved ones in my presence and I will provide honest feeback. I live outside of Detroit, Michigan. My hobbies include cooking, yoga, traveling to new places, hiking with my husband and our two dogs. I've experienced many therapies and have had several therapists myself. I am a licensed Professional Counselor as well as a Registered Art Therapist in Michigan with over 14 years of experience working as a School Counselor and Art Therapist. I have worked with individuals with a wide range of concerns including bullying, self esteem, discrimination, relationship issues and parenting problems. I have also helped many people communicate more freely by incorporating simple art techniques through our talk therapy sessions. At times, it helps to talk when there is not an actual problem or situation, but just as a release of sorts of daily life stressors. My counseling style is open and light. I believe in treating people with respect, open-mindedness, and humanity. I utilize cognitive-behavioral, humanistic, and rational-emotive counseling. We will identify what your goals need to be and break them down into small, achievable, non-intimidating steps. There is nothing wrong with "good selfish". We take care of our bodies, our spirit and our health.... mental health is just as important! Let's Talk!
