I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker licensed in the state of Indiana. I have 15 years of experience working as a therapist with a wide range of clients. I have worked in a school-based setting and have a passion for helping children and their families have the best life possible. I also currently work with adults as well. I work with a variety of diagnoses, including anxiety, depression, PTSD and many others. My counseling style is relational and warm. To me, the best therapeutic work is done in a casual, laid back atmosphere where the client feels heard. I believe in approaching issues with a balance of sensitivity and firmness. I have a passion for helping people heal not only their mind, but their body and spirit as well. The three have to be balanced for someone to be living their best life. I am so proud of you for wanting to take the step of doing counseling to make your life into what you want it to be. When you are ready to take that step, I am ready to walk along side you in your journey. I look forward to meeting you!

As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in private practice it's my education, professional experience and dedication to those that I serve that encourages me to continue to provide the type of personal, quality, down-to-earth and relavant counseling that my clients deserve. For more than 20 years I have had the privilege and opportunity to work with a wide range of populations, diagnoses and circumstances. As part of my undergraduate degree, I completed a six month internship with the Office of Vocational Rehabilitation. My internship with Vocational Rehab allowed me to work with adults faced with emotional and physical limitations that hindered their ability to obtain and maintain successful employment. Shortly after graduating from college, I continued my work in supportive employment serving individuals with developmental disabilities. During this period I also worked part-time in a group home setting with the same population gaining experience in addressing their individual behavioral needs in the home and community. My direct experience in supportive employment led me to work with a larger mental health center in the role of a case manager with adults in need of gaining and maintaining employment. As a case manager I provided ongoing case management services to adult individuals with mental illness, developed and facilitated a job preparation group, and assisted these individuals with referrals to supported employment programs and the Office of Vocational Rehabilitation. I took advantage of an opportunity to continue to build on my experiences in the social work field and return to school to begin work on my Masters Degree. I later joined an agency that served children in residential, foster care and their own homes. I was employed initially in the role of a case manager and provided on-going case management and 24 hour on-call crisis intervention services to children enrolled in their foster care program. As part of my practicum and continuing after graduation with my Masters, I provided individual, family and group therapy to children, adolescents and their adult parents in a home-based setting. This program primarily served juvenile offenders and their families through the Juvenile Probation Department. My enjoyment of working with not only juveniles and their families, but individuals across all ages led to a period of nine and a half years that I provided therapeutic counseling services to children, adolescents and adults at a local community mental health center. My experiences ranged from managing and directing a partial hospitalization program, to crisis intervention and assessment of all ages through a partnership with the regional hospital. During this period, my main mode of treatment was through providing out-patient individual and family therapy to children, adolescents and adults. In October of 2008 I started my own private practice "Choices in Counseling". My interest in private practice was driven by increased limitations and constraints in providing services to clients within the mental health center environment. It is my belief that by operating under a private practice model, I am better able to offer more individualized, comprehensive, quality services to my clients.

I have been working in the community mental health field for more than 22 years now, and most recently have been working as a clinical supervisor for staff working with those on the autism spectrum or with intellectual disabilities. I have enjoyed the recent shift in our field towards virtual therapy - more than I thought I would, to be honest. My therapeutic approach is very person-centered. I will take your lead and adapt as needed, but I find I tend towards the more cognitive- behavioral approaches. More than anything, being a therapist has taught me that everyone has a story, we are all a work in progress, and there’s no such thing as “normal.” We all need help sometimes, and I would be happy to be that help, if I am able.

How should I prepare for my first therapy session with a Brookston counselor?

Before seeing your Brookston therapist, prep for your session by reading to understand the therapy process. You might write a list of questions you want to ask your psychotherapist, any emotional pain you may feel, and the ways in which you hope to improve. When you attend your session, let them know if you have any concerns about therapy or feel unsure about what to talk about. They may help guide you with open-ended therapeutic questions while offering mental health services. The first session will often serve as an intake to get to know you as a person and learn why you're attending therapy in Brookston.

Should I find a therapist or psychologist for therapy if I feel fine?

Some simply don't feel the need to see a psychologist. However, some people may avoid attending therapy due to stigma or preconceived notions of what therapy entails. Although psychologists often support people with mental health conditions, you do not need a diagnosis or condition to attend therapy. You can discuss grief, relationship concerns, stress, or life changes and ask for general feedback and advice from a therapist. A Brookston licensed clinical social worker may help you gain power over your life and emotions while you navigate day-to-day experiences.

Gaining a new perspective on yourself through various therapies might allow you to improve your self-esteem, work through relationships, and gain a better sense of your mental health goals. The success you may find through therapy with a Brookston counselor can be dependent on your process.

People may also attend therapy for specific motives, such as bullying, an autism diagnosis, a desire to learn mindfulness meditation, personality concerns, trouble with office workers, specific phobias, and many other principles that a counselor can help with.

Is mental health care and therapy with a therapist worth it?

Therapy with a licensed counselor is effective and has the power to change individuals' lives. Each client is at a different stage of their emotional healing journey in life, as each human can be unique in their personality, expression, skills, and goals. A psychologist can target various symptoms, experiences, and personalities to help you feel your best and put you on the path to healing. Unlike advice from a friend, family, or non-professional, a mental health therapist has an understanding of various disorders like ADHD and depression with many hours of experience in treating adults in their practice. For this reason, seeing an evidence based psychologist in Brookston, Indiana can be worth it. Over 41 million adults in the US attend therapy services each year, showing it's a popular option and is proven to be effective.

Brookston has many clinicians who practice person or client-centered individual therapy in-person and through online therapy to assist clients in their healing journey. If you opt into online therapy, you might also be able to meet with providers all over the United States and change therapists easily at any time. Many people struggling with anxiety and depression, substance abuse, body image issues, and more find therapists that are a good fit for them, feel supported, and gain further insight into their lives through internet-based therapy.

Do therapists judge you in therapy sessions during telehealth appointments?

The boundaries between you and a therapist are in place to help you and them regarding ethical concerns. Mental health professionals are held by ethical standards through the American Psychological Association (APA) and are not allowed to judge or harm their clients. If you are concerned about sharing details about yourself, feel free to withhold personal information. Their job in the therapeutic relationship is to create a safe place, help you gain a deeper understanding of your mental health, and support you. You might consider changing counselors if you don't feel safe or respected.
