As a Clinical Social Worker I try to cover every possible scenario one could imagine. Looking at multiple dimensions of you as a person, your environment and timeline, as well as how affected you have been during your experience of the different life stages. Supporting the process to find or reach your own personal goals. I use a bio-psycho-social-spiritual assessment to help determine the areas in your life you need or want support. My approach to therapy is client centered, utilizing cognitive behavioral therapy and motivational interviewing when appropriate. Most of my practice has focused on issues with trauma, anxiety, life transitions, and addictions. I am aware of the technological transformation that has occurred in the way we live and communicate. Therefore, I have embraced online therapy as a way of providing relief and healing through therapy, counseling, coaching and support. More importantly, my goal is to have a successful therapeutic relationship with you, based on a deep understanding of your needs.
John Shafer
By way of introduction, I am John Shafer, LCSW-R. In 1998, I graduated from Syracuse University's School of Social Work with my master's in social work. Throughout my social work career, I strived to learn from the highest credentialed and experienced professionals. Background wise, I have experience working with people in the following areas: rural community mental health settings, school-based mental health settings, city and suburban settings. Vocationally, diversification of approaches to working with people from an array of different environments provided my basis for success. I worked with people across the spectrum of age ranges from three years old to people in their nineties. Also, I gained experience working with people from different socio-economic statuses. Over the years, my ongoing diversity training afforded me opportunities to hone my clinical skills related to populations covering a wide gamut of racial and ethnic backgrounds. I sought to develop techniques to address gender identity expressions that was done in a culturally sensitive manner. Along the way, I prided myself on developing counseling and psycho-therapy skills. In the course of working with people, the therapy models I used most often included: Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Mindfulness, Narrative Therapy, Strengths Based Therapy, and Solution-Focused Therapy. In general, my employment opportunities accorded me the chance to develop clinical skills. I implemented different types of therapy such as individual therapy, couple's therapy and group therapy; all of which provided me with professional development opportunities. Interweaving professional experiences with evidence based therapy models, I work collaboratively with people to attain client-centered and person-centered goals.

Life's hardships sometimes deplete our emotions. Loss, trauma, anxiety, depression, and confusion consume our inner resources, and we might need help from a "neutral" person to detect what's going on and help us restore our inner peace, so we should be capable of having passion and delight in work, relationships and feel good about ourselves. I'm a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) in the States of New York and New Jersey and a trained Psychoanalyst. In psychoanalytic therapy, you'll gain mastery over your emotional world and feel empowered to deal with life's circumstances.

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker practicing in the State of New York and hold a Masters Degree in Social Work from Stony Brook University. In addition to general counseling, I have worked in substance abuse and mental health counseling for over six years. As a therapist, I prioritize creating a warm and welcoming environment for clients to feel comfortable in the therapeutic process, whatever that looks like for them. I don’t shy away from working outside the box and find creativity to be an asset in meeting clients where they’re at. I am dedicated in helping my clients challenge the thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that are keeping them from living the life they want to live, while also accepting that which is out of their control. I utilize an eclectic array of therapeutic approaches, including but not limited to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Family Systems Therapy, and Holistic Therapy. I believe that some of the most successful work in therapy is done when we’re able to pull on tools and techniques from various approaches to create a truly individualized treatment plan. I aim to create a safe space for folks to talk about hard things, so they always know they have somewhere to bring the heaviness that they might carry. I believe that there is nothing more profound than making the decision to show up and put in the work, but I also believe that none of us can do it alone. I hope to be a part of the village that it takes.

Life often asks us to juggle more than feels manageable. I help clients prioritize self-care and work through the mental health challenges, work pressures, relationship strains, and everyday stressors that get in the way of living the life they want. I approach therapy as a collaborative partnership. Meaningful change happens when therapist and client work together toward goals that matter to you—which is why my practice is grounded in a strength-based perspective. You bring insight into your own life; I bring tools, perspective, and a space where you can express your thoughts and emotions freely. Having a voice in your therapeutic journey isn't optional—it's central. Clients deserve a therapist who listens fully, stays curious, and remains committed to their growth. I strive to be that presence, session after session. If this resonates, I'd welcome a brief consultation to see if we're a good fit.

In our work together, we’ll take time to understand the challenges you’re facing—whether it’s anxiety that keeps you on edge, depression that feels heavy and persistent, or the lingering impact of trauma. Rather than rushing to “fix” things, we’ll move at a pace that feels safe, focusing on gently shifting patterns and beliefs that may have once helped you cope but no longer serve the life you’re trying to build. You can expect a supportive space where compassion and honesty go hand in hand, and where you’re encouraged to show up exactly as you are. I bring curiosity, insight, and a touch of humor into our sessions, helping create a human, relatable environment that makes room for vulnerability, self-discovery, and meaningful, lasting change. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with over a decade of experience in mental healthcare and crisis work, helping people work through some of their toughest times. My approach is collaborative and strengths-based, grounded in the belief that you already carry the inner resources needed for healing. Together, we’ll explore what’s happening in your present—your thoughts, emotions, relationships, and patterns—while also gently weaving in parts of your past when it feels helpful and relevant. I aim to honor the fullness of your story: its depth, its complexity, and the resilience that runs through it. Therapy with me is active and engaging; sometimes reflective and inward-looking, other times practical and goal-oriented. The process is dynamic, evolving as your needs, insights, and confidence grow. Throughout our work, my intention is to create a safe, nonjudgmental space where you can feel grounded and connected. I value authenticity and will show up as a real person in the room with you—steady, warm, and committed to your growth.
