Angela Alderman-Shotton
I am a professional counselor licensed in the State of Oklahoma with 10 years of experience working as a psychotherapist, in outpatient settings; such as in office, homes, and schools. I view counseling as much more than a vocation-- but as a purpose and calling; and I also thoroughly enjoy the variety and challenge that navigating through Clients' situations can bring. I have treated (and continue to work with) Clients of a wide--range of demographics; with a variety of concerns, including depression, anxiety/panic, self-esteem, relationship communication and intimacy issues, parenting problems, and career challenges. I have worked with many people who have struggled with issues in divorce, as well as emotional and/or narcissistic abuse. I have had experience in working in a domestic violence offenders’ group counseling setting, as well. My counseling style is warm, accepting, and intuitive. I believe in treating anyone with respect, empathy, and compassion, as I work to emphasize my clients’ strengths and abilities. My approach combines a Person-Centered/ Motivational Interviewing; cognitive-behavioral, solution-focused, existential, family systems, as applicable. I will tailor our sessions to your needs; as we can also work together to form a treatment plan to meet your unique and specific goals. I further subscribe to the belief in the role of the therapist which is to 'draw out', or to motivate, to support, to encourage; to provide knowledge of psychotherapeutic tools, thought constructs, as well as ideas and resources, to augment a client's mental/ behavioral health/ relationship communication. In beginning your process of change, empowerment, and self-love discovery today; I invite you; my future valued client--to walk alongside you; on any stage of your journey. Looking Onward and Upward, Angela Alderman-Shotton, LPC “The paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change. The good life is a process, not a state of being. It is a direction not a destination.” ~ Psychologist Carl Rogers

As a Licensed Marital and Family Therapist in Oklahoma for over 20 years, I have a systemic perspective on the issues clients bring to therapy. I understand that your difficulties exist in relationship to your larger circle of family, friends and colleagues. Clients appreciate this perspective because it seems like I “get it” differently than someone who doesn't view people systemically. Some of the specific struggles I treat are coping with all types of grief and loss (not just death), managing life transitions, anxiety/stress, caregiver issues, sleep struggles, communication, anger management, money/financial issues, self-esteem and experiencing compassion fatigue and burnout. A particular passion of mine is working with Third Culture Kids (TCKs), especially helping them transition to living in the United States. I have walked alongside TCKs and Adult TCKs for many years and have extensive experience in this therapeutic area. Ultimately, I believe, you are the expert on your story and you have many strengths that will assist you in overcoming the things that challenge you! I hope to be someone who can help you along the way! Taking the first step to sign up for therapy can take courage, and I am proud of you for getting started.

The Humanistic approach, which says for a person to "grow", they need an environment that provides them with genuineness (openness and self-disclosure), acceptance (being seen with unconditional positive regard), and empathy (being listened to and understood) most closely reflects my personal belief. The Cognitive-Behavioral approach, which says that our thoughts and feelings profoundly affect our emotions and behaviors, is another approach that I follow. The goal of therapy will be to diminish existing problems by examining and identifying those thought patterns which are negative and problematic and restructuring them into more positive and adaptive patterns of thinking about oneself and one’s environment. If you have any further questions regarding my training or practice, please feel free to contact me.
