Jonathan Richard
Hello! My name is Jon Richard, LPC. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor who works in Austin, Texas. After graduating from the Masters of Arts in Counseling (MAC) program at St. Edward's University, I completed an internship at Capital Area Counseling (CAC) which is the most rewarding chapter of my adult life. At CAC, I discovered my therapeutic "voice" while counseling a diverse sample of the population (those who suffered from addiction, gender dysphoria, divorce, the harsh realities of youth and middle age). By "therapeutic voice" I mean that a person-centered approach was congruent with my easy-going personality. I felt more authentic with clients when we engaged in a loose, organic conversations (sometimes informed by cognitive behavioral therapy). Since that time, I have gravitated toward Solution Focused Brief Therapy (though I cannot market myself as an official SFBT therapist). I find SFBT to be particularly liberating because it leads with inspiring the client by asking them about their desired outcome. Once I learn what difference you would like to notice in yourself, my line of questions will focus on your previous experience with happiness/success. The more vividly you can describe your history with the desired outcome, the more possible it seems. The popular saying amongst SFBT experts like Elliott Connie, MA, LPC is "It's simple, but it's not easy". I cannot promise "easy", but I will say that the journey will be meaningful and invigorating.

I am a mental health counselor licensed in the state of Texas. Professionally, I have a little over 3 years of experience. I have been a fitness/life coach for over 20 years and I am a veteran with 10 years of service. Therefore, in both positions I have had the honor to provide counseling and guidance to hundreds of individuals in all areas and walks of life. Currently, I work as a mental health counselor at a Behavioral Hospital. Our main focus is to attend to the crisis at hand, utilizing brief and swift psychotherapy. Once patients are stable, I provide psychotherapy or psychoeducation in accord to their main problems or obstacles. I have worked with patients and clients with a wide range of concerns, including depression, anxiety, relationship issues, parenting problems, substance/alcohol, and sexual abuse. Been a Hispanic male veteran with personal experience in dealing with mental health, I understand the stigmatization and the cultural sensitivity that is needed to provide support for any and all individuals. Therefore, I get to work more often with patients and their families, who struggle with PTSD and other military related trauma. I am a Christian and follow Christian principles, therefore, I believe in treating all individuals with outmost respect, sensitivity, and compassion. My counseling style is assertive and direct, but empathic and compassionate, all at once. My approach is eclectic, hence, it is a combination of cognitive-behavioral, spiritual, psychodynamic and positive psychology. I am able and willing to adapt to any form of counseling and treatment as required by the patient or client, in order to meet your specific needs and unique obstacle. Lastly, I am currently finishing my doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology. Hence, I am constantly learning new ways of improving my skills, knowledge, and attaining more tools to better serve my patients and clients. I personally understand the courage and confidence that it is needed to accept that one needs help and seek that help in order to better one’s life and improve quality of life, for you and those around you. I am excited and look forward to providing guidance and effective therapy.

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor with more than 20 years of experience. I have experience in helping clients with a variety of issues including stress and anxiety, relationship issues, family conflicts, intimacy related issues and other issues. I believe that you are the expert of your story and that you have many strengths that will assist you in overcoming things that challenge you. Taking the first step to seeking a more fulfilling and happier life takes courage and I am here to support you in that process. My Evening and standing appointments are done via zoom, are 60 minutes and are reserved for clients that are self-pay or utilizing their insurance. I accept some appointments via the BetterHelp calendar but BetterHelp sessions are limited to 45 minutes which essentially is 40 minutes of therapy. This is a limiting factor of the site; I am not paid for engaging with clients for longer than 45 minutes so it is important to come to these sessions prepared as our time here is somewhat limited. You do not have to go through this journey of life alone. Allow me to meet you where you are at and help be your guide in this amazing journey called life. Together we will find healing through proven models of treatment that I am formally trained in and have practiced for many years. I accept insurance as well and generally reserve later appointment openings for zoom calls and clients that prefer to utilize their insurance.
