Leslie Powers
I am Leslie S Powers, a Licensed Professional Counselor from Alabama. I have been in this profession forover 30 years, having begun my journey as a Certified Addictions Counselor in 1988. Since then, I have worked in treatment centers and free-standing mental health clinics via private practice, school counseling, and contracting with my county's Department of Human Resources. I am a 1994 graduate of Troy University with a Master's degree in Counseling and Human Development. I am also a certified school counselor. I have a Master of Speech Communication degree from Auburn University. I have earned approximately 40 hours post-graduate in the counseling psychology and ministerial fields. My approach to counseling is cognitive, and I especially appreciate the solution-focused therapies. I believe that clients are the experts at problem-solving given the right questions and goals, and that an accepting counseling environment allows positive outcomes! We'll proceed toward your goals as colleagues, working with humor and respect, serious-minded curiosity, homework and brainwork. If you're coping with longterm mental health issues which require medicine and physician supervision along with psychotherapy, I'm willing to be part of your care team. (I generally do not work with chronic pain clients in online settings without collaboration with an MD. ) I look forward to speaking to you soon! Leslie

It’s awesome that you’ve reached out to BetterHelp. Change takes courage! I am a mental health therapist with a Master’s in counseling and have over 20 years of experience as a counselor. Much of that time has been spent working with folks addressing substance use disorder and accompanying issues such as HCV, esteem, trauma, loss, anxiety and depression. Many times, relationship and identity problems are also present and addressed. My approach is often based, in part, on the existentialistic philosophy of assisting others in finding their purpose and authentic self. This generally occurs through working on personal growth based on self-honesty and responsibility. The transformation is possible through the application of cognitive behavior therapy, that empowers them to be congruent in their thinking and actions. Challenging perceptions and hurtful thoughts are also vital. By focusing on their strengths, coping strategies are offered to assist them in managing their symptoms. My life experiences have included recovering and living with significant, chronic health challenges. My world view has further been enhanced by living abroad and working with various populations. I look forward to building a working relationship with you that is both safe and without judgement. Please contact me so I may assist you on your journey of change!

It can be difficult opening up to people and asking for help. I want to applaud you for taking this first big step towards accomplishing the goals that you have for your mental health. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor and I have worked in this field for 6 years. I received my Master's Degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from University of North Alabama. My approach to treatment is like we are taking a road trip. You are driving and decide where we're headed, how we get there, and where we stop along the way. I sit beside you and hold the road map and make suggestions. If the car breaks down, I don't fix it for you, but help you to figure out the tools you need to address the issue yourself. While I might not have all the answers I am willing to go on this journey with you to help you become the version of yourself that you want to be.
