If you have ever been in a traumatic situation such as a hurricane, tornado, flood, or tornado, and you have flashbacks, nightmares, and trouble sleeping, you may have post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). While it is most common in Veterans, anyone who has experienced a traumatic event can get PTSD. There are many therapists in the New Hyde Park area who can help.

New Hyde Park, New York in Nassau County is a fabulous place to live with many parks and museums to enjoy. The American Guitar Museum has hundreds of old and new guitars as well as a guitar doctor and lessons, so you can learn to play. Some of the great parks include the Nassau Haven Park, Tullamore Playground, Edgemere Park, and the Garden City Bird Sanctuary.

Hi there! My name is Jill Markowitz and I have been practicing for the last 5 years as a LMHC (Licensed Mental Health Counselor). I have experience working with various populations - the LGBTQ+ community as well as with clients who are experiencing depression, anxiety, grief and a difficult time with life transitions. My role as your therapist is twofold; a) to listen to your concerns and provide you with a safe space to speak about your thoughts and feelings without feeling judged and b) provide you with new tools for your toolbox that you can carry with you even after we stop working together. My ultimate goal throughout this process is to get you to talk through all of your thoughts and feelings, help you be able to understand them better and get you to a better place mentally, emotionally and physically. When I start working with a new client, I let them know that throughout this process, I view them as the experts in their own lives, relying on them to provide me with insight into themselves, and together with my clinical knowledge, we can work together on reaching the goals we set forth. Therapy is a collaborative venture, one that is a process and takes time to see change. Additionally, there might be some moments where you come upon difficult truths about yourself or your situation. Just keep in mind this is all part of the journey we are on together. I look forward to working to with you and helping you work through whatever obstacles are currently in your way!

.Hi! My name is Laura White. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in New York. I have been active in the field since 1980, when I worked as a Research Assistant at Suffolk County Jail. It was then that I decided Social Work would become an integral part of my life. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology, a Masters in Social Work, additional Masters-level coursework in Gerontology, and I am Certified for EMDR, Level One, 2001. I use a Person-Centered approach as well as Family Systems, Socratic Method, Motivational Interviewing, and CBT. I have a strong belief that we need to locate the positives in our lives, and build our self esteem from there. I work with all Ages, Religions, Cultures, and LGBTQ. I work with patients who have Depression, Anxiety, Bipolar, PTSD, Addictions, Eating Disorders, Social Anxiety, Relationship and Family Issues, Sexual, Physical and Emotional Abuse, LGBTQ issues, Pain and Medical/Disability Issues, ADHD, Employment, Home Health, Cancer and other Disabling Illnesses, and End of Life Issues. In my family, we have lost three parents to Cancer, so my experience is both personal as well as professional. I understand Caregiver Stress. Lastly, if referrals need to be made, I research the area and make the appropriate referrals, for medication, rehabs, etc. My approach is supportive, and goal-oriented. I have a varied background in Social Work, and have been active for 40 years. I look forward to working with new patients. I am available nights and weekends. Thank you!

A Brief Introduction to Rosie Pettway, LCSW My social work career began long before I actually earned the degree. It began during my transition from corporate paralegal to elementary substitute teacher in the NYC Public School System. Teaching had placed me in a position to witness firsthand the deep emotional needs of children, which were being neglected and unmet by a system that promised nurturance, support and protection. I noticed the absence of much needed school based social workers. There was only one assigned to that particular school and she was overburdened with duties related to IEP’s for those children identified as having special educational needs. Coupled with (1) my desire to bridge the gap between strengthening mental health resources to children/families/teachers and (2) the physical and emotional trauma related to 911, I knew my path would lead me to becoming a clinical social worker. A total revelation to me! With my heart leading, I applied for social work school the next year and was accepted for the term beginning August 2002. In much the same way I felt called to the field of social work, I also felt called to working with the aging. As I sat next to the chairs of patients receiving their dialysis treatments, I heard stories similar to the ones I’d heard in my work with children – histories of unacknowledged, unresolved trauma they’d been carrying/dragging across the lifespan: generalized anxiety and fear, immigration status concerns, systemic racism, sexual orientation, physical violence, teenage pregnancies, forced marriages, incest/rape/sexual abuse, partner violence, common feelings of unworthiness – unwanted and unloved, and stigmas related to learning disorders and mental health diagnoses. The main difference between the two populations is that the aging adults had carried their burdens and distress over a much longer period. Over lifetimes, and now many are finding themselves existing in a society where their needs are undervalued, thus unprotected. It is my belief that within each of us resides an inner child, still longing for that never received attention (to be seen, to be heard), and still acting out to his/her own self-detriment, often manifesting chronic pain, illness and disease. Armed with this knowledge and now an older person myself, this presents an opportunity for me to participate and assist in the totality of healing for this population – mentally, emotionally and physically, including the child within, bringing unity, integration, stability and peace with Self-Love as the overarching goal. I began my social work career working directly with the youth; and in working with the adult aging population, I continue to touch the youth. For me, this is the best of both worlds. In this, I am fully grateful and satisfied.
