Dealing with challenges that life brings can be daunting and difficult and that is where counseling can help! Having someone to listen to you and help you deal with problems that come up, help you work on improving your mood and functioning, or help you identify ways to enhance your relationships in your life is my goal. I have a supportive, non-judgmental, open minded approach with clients and it is my goal to make people feel heard and understood while helping them address the concerns that brought them to counseling. I graduated from University of Southern California with my Masters in Social Work in 2013 and I have been providing individual and couples counseling since then. As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker I have experience working with diverse people from various backgrounds and ages on a variety of issues. I believe I can help you overcome obstacles in your life by utilizing evidence based approaches and techniques that can help you effectively tackle challenges and issues and enhance your day to day life!

Having returned to grad school to become a therapist at the midpoint of my life, I bring a wealth of knowledge from being a parent, a preschool teacher, a 7th grade Waldorf teacher, an art instructor, a graphic designer and copyrighter, and an art consultant for over 20 years. My school trajectory took me from UCLA to San Jose State to Sac State, a Waldorf training college and finally to San Francisco's CIIS. As I've entered the field of being a therapist, what I've learned is that the act of becoming a therapist means you are a good listener and humbled each time a human being opens their heart to you. To that end, I work diligently to understand and tailor each treatment I design to work specifically with the client in front of me. I relish the empathy and dignity of Person-Centered Therapy because I firmly believe that each person knows themselves best and can apply what they learn when they are given the tools and perspective to see solutions within the framework of the very problems they brought to therapy in the first place. Being an EXA therapist means that I employ the Expressive Arts (poetry, rap, photography, 2D and 3D art, dance, sculpture, writing, drama, music, gardening, and cooking, and eco-art) into the healing process. The art becomes another tool and a living testament to the fact that healing is happening. My style of therapy focuses upon being sensitive, empathetic with a healthy dash of questions. My sessions are usually filled with interactive games, art, laughter, meditation and yes, breakthroughs and tears - all the range of possible human expression. People tell me they come away from their session feeling happier, lighter, clearer and understood. I have great compassion for the people I see, whether via telehealth or in-person. My goal is to be fully present, listening, supporting, acknowledging and empowering you forward, however that next chapter appears. Looking forward to chatting with you soon!

Samantha Nelums
Hi, I'm Sam (totally fine if you call me Samantha). I believe therapy works best when the process is collaborative and authentic. I create a space each session that feels emotionally safe meaning you are encouraged to speak freely about your thoughts, feelings, and lived experiences. Clients have shared that they appreciate the meaningful feedback and thoughtful direction I provide during our sessions, and I strive to balance support with practical guidance. Outside of work you can find me reading nonfiction, cooking (or enjoying!) good food, listening to true crime podcasts, or chasing my toddler son around—who, it turns out, is incredibly fast and has mastered the word "no." I also love relaxing on my patio while BBQing, attempting to grow things in my garden, and spending time with my family.

I truly hold a passion for connecting with others in finding their identities, overcome their struggles, and process their experiences. Do you currently have a goal to increase self-awareness for better understanding of yourself? Do you experience intense emotions that feel difficult to manage on your own? Does it feel like you have lost control and want to learn how to regain control again? If you answered yes to any of these questions, I would love to speak with you and process how I can help. My areas of experience/interest include eating disorders, anxiety, depression, self-esteem, and trauma. As I have explored various therapeutic techniques, I have come to find I work best through the psychodynamic lens. I am a very curious therapist and like to explore where behaviors & struggles stem from for true understanding and healing of each unique individual. You do not have to have a mental diagnosis to be a client for psychotherapy. Therapy is for anyone who is willing to explore and has the motivation for change. You deserve the opportunity to invest in yourself for your overall wellbeing and improvement in the quality of your life. I would to speak with you to determine if I am the right fit for you.

I have worked extensively with a diverse patient population, such as adolescents in high-school settings, geriatrics, those with developmental differences, and those with dual diagnoses, among others. Although predominantly trained in cognitive-behavioral therapy, I also work from a humanistic model, maintaining a humble and tentative stance, since I believe empathy, compassion, and attunement are at the bedrock of the relational dynamic. Online therapy vs. in-person therapy in California
Online therapy and in-person therapy both connect you with a licensed professional, and the main difference is how you meet.
