Dan Cooper
Hello, and thanks for checking out my profile. My name is Dan, and I've been a professional counselor for about 15 years now. I have enjoyed having the opportunity to help many people over the years achieve greater functioning in their lives. Counseling, as I practice it, is a discussion of your goals and how you want to pursue them. When we meet, we discuss how your efforts go, as well as the changes you want to make in pursuit of them. I provide constructive feedback, but my role is not to express judgment over what you feel you want to pursue, though I may make suggestions on how you might want to pursue it. While I have worked with clients of many backgrounds and diagnoses, I feel that my approach works best with those who are working to better various relationships, those who are working to deal better with their responses to things, dealing with the effects of various mood and personality disorders (depression, mania, anger, anxiety, borderline personality disorder), as well as those working to maintain abstinence from substance use. I do have particular interests in working with those who are transitioning between phases of life (high school, college, career, etc.), and those who are working to overcome roadblocks in various creative endeavors (art, music, writing). All that said, I may not be a great option for those who are participating in counseling involuntarily, as my process benefits from a client's sincere interest in making meaningful change. I would add that I would not likely be a good fit for those seeking couples' counseling, for those seeking help with pornography or sex addiction, or for those seeking Christian or spiritual counseling. My approach is personable, informal, and non-directive. I aspire to be non-judgmental, and I try to really be a person in your corner, whatever corner that might be. If you're interested in exploring whether I might be a helpful support for you, I hope you'll feel comfortable in taking the next step to reach out and let me know how I can try to be of help to you. Please be aware, I'm currently available for phone or video sessions on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursday afternoons. I can text through the week, but do not generally check my messages on the weekends.

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Missouri. I have twenty years of therapeutic and mental health coaching experience. I support individuals to become successful who suffer from anxiety/depression, professional/academic problems, interpersonal conflicts, codependency problems, and much more. My modality of treatment is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Solution-focused Therapy, Client-Centered Therapy, Mindfulness, and I use behavioral interventions. Together we will explore underlying thoughts and beliefs that contribute to lowered self-esteem and self-confidence. We will identify self-sabotaging, behaviors that hinder your success academically/professionally, and derail interpersonal relationships. Every person struggles with issues. At some point in life, we all need support. The answer to your specific problem depends on you more than the problem. Your beliefs, personality, character, and environment all play a part in finding the correct solution. We will travel together, and you will find the best answer for you. I do not give you an answer to your particular issue or problem. Instead, I journey with you and explore new ideas and methods so that you can overcome difficult situations.
Paula Moore
I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in Illinois and Missouri. I graduated from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville in 2016, and have been working with a variety of clients and issues. I live and work in Alton, Illinois, about 30 miles north of St. Louis on the Mississippi River. My treatment approach is client-centered, goal-oriented, collaborative, and strengths-based. I believe that most mental health issues can be traced back to trauma; it’s not what is wrong with you, but what has happened to you. I use CBT and EMDR as my main therapy modalities, but also incorporate somatic processing, motivational interviewing, exposure therapy, and positive psychology. Once the negative beliefs are identified, the work is to create more adaptive beliefs, and process the actual traumas. Self-care, and coping skills for symptoms are extremely important, too, especially in the beginning of therapy. I am affirming, and believe that people get to decide who they are. I also believe that growth and evolution are inherent in our human nature. Reaching out for help with life’s challenges is one of the most important things one can do for their long-term health and well-being. I walk with you, never judging, and always supporting you with your goals. I look forward to helping you find relief from symptoms, needed solutions, and ultimately, true healing.

I have a Master’s degree in counseling and completed my doctoral work at Purdue University. My approach is a mixture of person-centered and cognitive theories. I believe that an honest and genuine relationship between counselor and client is important in pursuing your goals. My hope is to provide an empathic environment where we will explore problems, goals, hopes and dreams and make decisions that will move you forward. Since a person-centered approach focuses on understanding the situation from your point of view, I find that I can work with people from a wide range of racial, religious, and cultural backgrounds. While I favor person-centered and cognitive approaches, I firmly believe our approach must be tailored to you as a unique individual. I have experience working with teens, college students, adults, and couples. Common topics include: divorce, relationships/intimacy, stress, anxiety, grief, and coping with change among others. If you choose me as your helper and teammate we’ll begin by building a relationship in which we explore the dynamics of your current situation, clarify what you want, and develop plans to solve problems or pursue opportunities. You will be treated with respect, warmth, and good humor as we find our way forward.

How should I prepare for my first therapy session with a Hurley counselor?
Before seeing your Hurley therapist, prep for your session by reading to understand the therapy process. You might write a list of questions you want to ask your psychotherapist, any emotional pain you may feel, and the ways in which you hope to improve. When you attend your session, you can let our therapists know if you have any concerns about therapy or feel unsure about what to talk about. Hurley therapists here may help guide you with open-ended therapeutic questions while offering mental health services. The first session will often serve as an intake to get to know you as a person and learn why you're attending therapy in Hurley.
Should I find a therapist or psychologist for therapy if I feel fine?
Some simply don't feel the need to see a psychologist. However, some people may avoid attending therapy due to stigma or preconceived notions of what therapy entails. Although psychologists often support people with mental health conditions, you do not need a diagnosis or condition to attend therapy. You can discuss grief, relationship concerns, stress, or life changes and ask for general feedback and advice from a therapist. A Hurley licensed clinical social worker may help you gain power over your life and emotions while you navigate day-to-day experiences.
Gaining a new perspective on yourself through various therapies might allow you to improve your self-esteem, work through relationships, and gain a better sense of your mental health goals. The success you may find through therapy with a Hurley counselor can be dependent on your process.
People may also attend therapy for specific motives, such as bullying, an autism diagnosis, a desire to learn mindfulness meditation, personality concerns, trouble with office workers, specific phobias, and many other principles that a counselor can help with.
Is mental health care and therapy with a therapist worth it?
Therapy with a licensed counselor is effective and has the power to change individuals' lives. Each client is at a different stage of their emotional healing journey in life, as each human can be unique in their personality, expression, skills, and goals. A psychologist can target various symptoms, experiences, and personalities to help you feel your best and put you on the path to healing. Unlike advice from a friend, family, or non-professional, a mental health therapist has an understanding of various disorders like ADHD and depression with many hours of experience in treating adults in their practice. For this reason, seeing an evidence based psychologist in Hurley, Missouri can be worth it. Over 41 million adults in the US attend therapy services each year, showing it's a popular option and is proven to be effective.
Hurley has many clinicians who practice person or client-centered individual therapy in-person and through online therapy to assist clients in their healing journey. If you opt into online therapy, you might also be able to meet with providers all over the United States and change therapists easily at any time. Many people struggling with anxiety and depression, substance abuse, body image issues, and more find therapists that are a good fit for them, feel supported, and gain further insight into their lives through internet-based therapy.
Do therapists judge you in therapy sessions during telehealth appointments?
The boundaries between you and a therapist are in place to help you and them regarding ethical concerns. Mental health professionals are held by ethical standards through the American Psychological Association (APA) and are not allowed to judge or harm their clients. If you are concerned about sharing details about yourself, feel free to withhold personal information. Their job in the therapeutic relationship is to create a safe place, help you gain a deeper understanding of your mental health, and support you. You might consider changing counselors if you don't feel safe or respected.
