Thank you for choosing me to embark on this journey with you! "To get thru the hardest journey, we need take only one step at a time, but we must keep on stepping" Hi, my name is Kandace Graves, I am a licensed professional counselor in the state of North Carolina. I received a Master of Science in Mental Health Counseling from Capella University in 2016. I am currently licensed in North Carolina by the North Carolina Board of Licensed Professional Counselors. (13510). My graduate experience includes a 12-month internship counseling men and women within an urban community in Ohio. As your counselor my aim is to provide a safe and supportive environment where we can collaborate and work at your own pace to help you reach your goals. I work with men, women, children, teens, couples and families whom have experienced trauma, grief, depression, and anxiety. People who have difficulty transitioning into a new chapter in life and provide reunification therapy to families of divorce. I also provide couples counseling. The theoretical approach I use include but are not limited to Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Person-Centered Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, and Rational Behavior Therapy. Though each person will experience hardship and difficulty, I believe that the problem with emotions and behaviors are generally a result of how one thinks and feels about a given situation. Person-Centered Therapy emphasizes each person’s uniqueness, value and worth which provide an environment safe enough to share honestly and openly. Dialectical Behavior Therapy emphasizes acceptance of uncomfortable feelings or thoughts rather than struggling with or rejecting them, allowing change to occur. Solution Focused Therapy relies on what was helpful in other situations in which the client was able to cope. All theoretical orientations are helpful in identifying the root of distress. I believe that knowing where you come from is important to know where you are headed. Trauma and other experiences have a way of permeating into other areas of our lives such as marriage, familial relationships and friendships. Along with the many benefits of counseling come risks. Since counseling often involves discussing unpleasant or uncomfortable aspects of your life, you may experience feelings such as sadness, guilt, anger, shame and helplessness, just to name a few. Counseling allows you to process your feelings and often leads to better relationships and relief from feelings of distress. In order to benefit the most from the counseling experience you must be committed, engaged, and do work outside of therapy to meet your goals. I abide by the confidentiality standards set forth by NCBLPC and upheld by the state law. All of our communication becomes part of the clinical record, which is accessible to you upon request. I will keep confidential anything you say as part of our counseling relationship, with the following exceptions: (a) you direct me in writing to disclose information to someone else, (b) it is determined you are a danger to yourself or others (including child or elder abuse), or (c) I am ordered by a court to disclose information. This platform is not to be used for emergency purposes. If you are feeling like you will hurt yourself or someone else please contact the suicide hotline and/or go to the nearest emergency room. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask. I am excited to join you on this journey!

I am a doctor of clinical psychology and a licensed psychologist. My particular areas of expertise are in working with: teens, young adults, and parents; anxiety and depression; neurodiversity (such as ADHD and autism); and LGBTQ+ individuals and families. At this time, I'm only offering messaging-based services. This consists of asynchronous (not "live"), text-only conversations between the two of us. If you think that messaging might be a good format for your individual therapeutic or parent coaching services, please reach out and I'll be happy to discuss it with you further. I'm originally from The Triangle in NC, but I lived outside of Philadelphia for over ten years. During that time, I obtained my bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Swarthmore College, as well as my masters & doctoral degrees at Widener University's Institute for Graduate Clinical Psychology. I completed the following tracks & concentrations in my doctoral program: Diversity & Cross-cultural Psychology; Children, Adolescents, & Families; and School Psychology. My internships during my doctoral program were at: a public school; a community mental health center for kids, teens, & families; and an inpatient drug & alcohol rehabilitation facility. Upon returning to my home state in 2020, I worked primarily with LGBTQ+ teens, young adults, and their parents for three years in private practice. I approach individual therapy and parent coaching with warmth, acceptance, and compassion. I use an integration of third-wave therapies – such as Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT), & Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT) – and Family Systems. I'm particularly passionate about taking an intersectional, trauma-informed, gender-affirming approach to supporting LGBTQ+ young people and their families. I go by "Katherine" or "Dr. Ernst," and my pronouns are she/her. I live in The Triangle with my partner, along with our rescue dog and cats. I openly identify as a queer, disabled, Arab-American woman.

Understanding the type of therapy you'd like to search for is crucial before finding a therapist or psychologist in Norwood. Perhaps you're interested in narrowing your search for a psychotherapist that can offer psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral (CBT), talk therapy, provide group therapy, marriage and family therapy for individuals or couples, or couples therapy. Each type of support of this kind with BetterHelp therapists can offer various benefits and address or treat different disorders. If you're still unsure or are new to counseling in Norwood, feel free to contact the provider via email to find out which methods they practice.

It is also important to understand that mental health professionals in the United States are accredited to provide care, helping individuals and couples, with a variety of licenses for therapists. These include licensed marriage and family therapist (LMFT), licensed clinical social worker (LCSW), and clinical psychologist or doctor of psychology (PsyD). Regardless of their licensure, they are trained able to treat individuals and couples counseling, and sometimes children, in any type of therapy in the Norwood region and in the state of North Carolina. Find a therapist under any of these distinctions and know that the sessions they offer can provide a safe place to heal.

A mental health counselor working through their own in-person therapy practice in Norwood or online may assist clients in improving healthy relationships, communication skills, working through life transitions, couples counseling, managing a mood disorder, improving coping skills, self help tips, offer life coaching, family therapy, or change in negative thinking patterns. A Norwood therapist may also provide a safe place and validation for clients experiencing emotional pain, or that simply want a psychological assessment. Verified providers and therapists can provide licensed marriage and couples therapy, tailor to individual needs, and create a therapeutic relationship as a National Certified Counselor.

  • CBT
  • DBT
  • Substance use therapy
  • Couples therapy

Frequently asked questions (FAQs) about therapists and mental health services

Some other commonly asked questions on therapy with a licensed counselor and BetterHelp serving the Norwood area can be found below:

How does the cost of in-person counseling with a therapist compare to the cost of BetterHelp with a licensed Norwood therapist?

The average price of an in-person therapy session in the US with most therapists is $100 to $200 per hour. These prices may be higher in Norwood due to a higher cost of living, and a limited number of therapists taking new clients. The price also depends on the type of provider you are looking for. See the following average prices for various mental health providers without insurance:

  • Counseling with a psychiatrist: $150-$500
  • Counseling with therapists: $100-300
  • Therapy with a psychologist: $100

While many psychologists in Norwood may not take health insurance, some in the state of North Carolina may work on a sliding scale, meaning they'll factor in your income and charge what you can afford per session. With a BetterHelp therapist throughout the state of North Carolina you can expect significantly more affordable options, with therapists sessions ranging from $65 to $100 per week (billed every four weeks).

While their lived experience, expertise, careers, and background vary, therapists here all possess at least 3 years and 1,000 hours of hands-on experience with adult and sometimes teen patients, and have the necessary therapist credentials to provide a safe space for long lasting emotional healing in therapy.

How do I know if online counseling is right for my family in Norwood?

One of the potentially rewarding aspects of working with a Norwood therapist is the validation and active listening they can provide. Your friends and loved ones may also be available to listen, but you may feel that they may lack the skills to provide objective guidance. Counselors and therapists are trained to respond to various concerns, symptoms, and mental health conditions.

Therapists in your city can support you toward a healthier emotional state, regardless of your mental health, life concerns, or healing needs. While supporting individuals in developing healthier habits, another good benefit of Norwood therapy is having an understanding, safe space with a non-judgmental party who can support you through challenging experiences.

Many people have sensitive topics that they may feel ashamed to discuss with their friends or partner. A Norwood therapist can help you confront these concerns and open up through unique methods of support. There are also many types of therapy, such as art therapy, where you may find you can express yourself through creativity instead of words with a psychotherapist.

With a lot of people in NC, therapists may be booked out with clients. Through the list of profiles or therapists above and others within BetterHelp's team, you may be able to find a psychologist within 24 to 48 hours. If you're searching to find a a nearby psychotherapist close to 28128 or the surrounding zip codes, consider others available through the BetterHelp site where you can schedule a session based on your and the therapist's schedule. No matter if you are seeking help from therapists in your area or beyond, online therapy can be a great option.

How should I prepare for my first therapy session with a Norwood counselor?

Before seeing your Norwood therapist, prep for your session by reading to understand the process. You might write a list of questions you want to ask your psychotherapist, any emotional pain you may feel, and the ways in which you hope to improve. When you attend your session, you can let our therapists know if you have any concerns or feel unsure about what to talk about. Norwood therapists here may help guide you with open-ended therapeutic questions while offering mental health services. The first session will often serve as an intake to get to know you as a person and learn why you're attending therapy.

Should I find a therapist or psychologist for therapy if I feel fine?

Some simply don't feel the need to see a psychologist. However, some people may avoid attending therapy due to stigma or preconceived notions of what it might entail. Although psychologists often support people with mental health conditions, you do not need a diagnosis or specific condition. You can discuss grief, relationship concerns, stress, or life changes and ask for general feedback. A Norwood licensed clinical social worker may help you gain power over your life and emotions while you navigate day-to-day experiences.

Gaining a new perspective on yourself through various therapies might allow you to improve your self-esteem, work through relationships, and gain a better sense of your mental health goals. The success you may find with a Norwood counselor can be dependent on your process.

People may also attend therapy for specific motives, such as bullying, an autism diagnosis, a desire to learn mindfulness meditation, personality concerns, trouble with office workers, specific phobias, and many other principles that a counselor can help with.

Is mental health care and therapy with a therapist worth it?

Therapy with a licensed counselor is effective and has the power to change individuals' lives. Each client is at a different stage of their emotional healing journey in life, as each human can be unique in their personality, expression, skills, and goals. A psychologist can target various symptoms, experiences, and personalities to help you feel your best and put you on the path to healing. Unlike advice from a friend, family, or non-professional, a mental health therapist has an understanding of various disorders like ADHD and depression with many hours of experience in treating adults in their practice. For this reason, seeing an evidence based psychologist in Norwood, North Carolina can be worth it. Over 41 million adults in the US attend therapy services each year, showing it's a popular option and is proven to be effective.

Norwood has many clinicians who practice person or client-centered individual therapy in-person and through online sessions to assist clients in their healing journey. If you opt into online therapy, you might also be able to meet with providers all over the United States and change therapists easily at any time. Many people struggling with anxiety and depression, substance abuse, body image issues, and more find therapists that are a good fit for them, feel supported, and gain further insight into their lives through internet-based therapy.

Do therapists judge you in therapy sessions during telehealth appointments?

The boundaries between you and a therapist are in place to help you and them regarding ethical concerns. Mental health professionals are held by ethical standards through the American Psychological Association (APA) and are not allowed to judge or harm their clients. If you are concerned about sharing details about yourself, feel free to withhold personal information. Their job in the therapeutic relationship is to create a safe place, help you gain a deeper understanding of your mental health, and support you. You might consider changing counselors if you don't feel safe or respected.
