Phyllis Taliaferro
I began helping people at a Mental Health Clinic in New York. This lead me to a three year training program in therapy at a New York City Hospital. I have also taught at several New York Universities and Colleges. My training was theoretical. However, decades of practice has adjusted my approach in treatment to be more practical in order to address the issues of stress, anxiety and depression to help you achieve a well adjusted and satisfying life. I also acquired Certification in Critical Incident Stress Management while working with New York City Police, after the fall of the World Trade Center. This training has lent itself to helping people outside of the Department. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder affects many people on many levels. It also appears on multiple levels of degrees. Anxiety, stress and depression occur with separation and loss throughout life. Recently, I completed a year of study on Adoption Competency at Georgia State University. This training has proven to be a great toil in addressing and helping people with other separations and losses. Loss can cause anxiety, stress and in divorce, death and numerous other unexpected incidents in life. If you are willing to begin the journey to discover what is causing your discomfort, lets talk. I am looking forward to meeting you. Thank You, Phyllis Taliaferro LCSW-R

Welcome, and thank you for your interest in working with me here on BetterHelp. I’d like to take a moment to introduce myself so you can get a clear sense of who I am as a therapist and whether we may be a good fit as you pursue your goals. I am a New York–licensed clinical mental health counselor with nine years of professional experience. I support clients navigating stress and anxiety, trauma and abuse, anger management, motivation, self‑esteem, and confidence. My approach is grounded in respect, sensitivity, and compassion. I tailor our conversations and treatment plan to your unique needs, because your story and your strengths deserve individualized care. Taking the first step toward a more fulfilling and grounded life takes courage. I hold deep confidence in my clients’ ability to heal, grow, and create meaningful change, and I am here to walk alongside you in that process. My clinical background includes EMDRIA certification as an EMDR specialist, a post‑graduate degree in trauma and dissociation, and training in clinical hypnosis through the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis. I am also trained in Internal Family Systems (IFS) and am strongly rooted in systems thinking—recognizing that change in one area of life inevitably influences the whole. Before completing my MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Regent University, I spent eight years as a volunteer counseling paraprofessional with the United States Army, serving veterans and their families. My BA in theology from NBC also allowed me to serve in pastoral counseling roles within the civilian community. My professional work is deeply informed by my personal life as well—over 30 years of marriage, raising children, living with and thriving despite chronic illness, and navigating the complexities of everyday life. These experiences shape the empathy, steadiness, and perspective I bring to therapy. In addition to counseling, I am trained as a life coach through the iNLP Center, an International Coaching Federation–accredited program also recognized by the National Board for Certified Counselors. Coaching surprised me by becoming a passion. I have always believed in client empowerment—never offering advice, but instead helping clients discover their own clarity, wisdom, and direction. Coaching has strengthened this philosophy and continues to enrich my therapeutic work. A Few Logistical Notes As we work together, most of our connection will take place during scheduled sessions, with messaging used as a supportive supplement. I work part‑time on BetterHelp and am available on Mondays, Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons, and Thursdays. I respond to messages on those days. While I may read messages sooner, I reply during my designated work times to maintain a healthy work–life balance—something I encourage for my clients as well. If you choose to work with me, we will move at a pace that honors your needs, your strengths, and your readiness. I look forward to the possibility of supporting you as you grow into the life you’re seeking.
