Hello, my name is Linda Blackburn. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the State of North Carolina. I received my Bachelor of Science Degree from East Carolina University in 1993 and my Master's of Social Work Degree from East Carolina University in 1994 through an Advanced Standing Master's Program. I began my professional life as a Registered Nurse working with Adolescents and Adults in Psychiatric Nursing for eleven years. In 1992 I made the professional decision to move to Social Work with the goal of becoming an LCSW. I received my License in Clinical Social Work in 1995. I have extensive experience in outpatient counseling as the owner of my own practice for over ten years and in working in other outpatient practice settings over the years. While my experience has been with various diagnoses and behavioral disorders, my primary focus has been in the treatment of anxiety as well as depression. I am a Certified Clinical Anxiety Treatment Professional (CCATP). For twelve years I also worked as a Seminar Instructor with several continuing education groups providing day-long seminars around the United States on Grief, Bereavement, and Loss Therapy - Death and Non-Death Related. Over the past ten years, I also worked as an Adjunct Professor in Social Work for Shaw University, Raleigh North Carolina, teaching entry-level Social Work courses. What has been the most important factor for me over the years is the privilege to work with clients in developing trusting relationships that lead to an open team approach to counseling and effective outcomes. My theoretical approach to counseling is primarily an eclectic one focusing primarily on a person's unique needs and the situation at the time. I believe in the importance of respect, sensitivity, compassion and always maintaining a nonjudgmental approach to counseling. The understanding and the acceptance of people for who they are and their situation, and then tailoring a treatment approach that allows for personal growth and positive outcomes is fundamental to me in my role as your therapist. Additionally, over the past 4 years I have focused on developing a deeper understanding of treatment approaches through the utilization of treatment strategies based on knowledge of the neuroscience principles in the treatment of mental health. I realize that taking this step to reach out and ask for help can be frightening and confusing. I congratulate you on taking this important first step, and I look forward to working with you to achieve your better life.

Therapy should be interactive and dynamic and this is generated from focusing on a Cognitive Behavioral Therapy approach with a strong grounding in Strengths Perspective. A variety of issues to include Depression and Anxiety, trauma, relationship issues, men's issues, and personality disorders are areas in which I have particular experience in treating. The relationship between therapist and client should be one of trust and competence and it should promote open communication and honesty for change to occur. My clinical experiences began in acute psychiatric treatment facilities and have taken me through a variety of environments and populations to include adolescents as well as adults. I feel the therapeutic relationship can produce change through hard work and guidance as well as creativity and persistence. The therapeutic relationship is one of the most important foundations for change. The following information regarding Live Text Chat sessions is important ..please read over!!! Find a therapist near you in Emory, Virginia

Finding a therapist near you in Emory, Virginia starts with matching to a licensed professional who fits your needs, schedule, and goals. Virginia is home to people with diverse mental health needs across urban, suburban, and rural communities, which can make it challenging to find care. BetterHelp connects you with a licensed therapist through tailored matching, so you can begin care from home or wherever works for you.

The network includes over 30,000 licensed therapists globally, and over 4 million people have used BetterHelp to find support through online therapy. During matching, 93% of user preferences are met, which helps you connect with a therapist suited to what you are looking for. Whether you are searching for help with anxiety, trauma, affordable or insurance covered therapy, weekend or flexible scheduling, or virtual sessions, you can find a therapist and get started when you are ready.

Why work with a licensed therapist near you?

Working with a licensed therapist near you gives you access to professional mental health support from someone trained to help you understand and manage what you are going through. A licensed therapist can offer evidence-based approaches, a steady space to talk, and guidance tailored to your situation. In Virginia, online therapy can make that care more accessible, since sessions happen from home or wherever you are, without the need to travel to an office. This can help if your schedule is full, if travel is difficult, or if you simply prefer a more discreet setting. You can learn more about what a therapist does on the therapist role page.

Online therapy can be especially helpful for people living across Virginia, where access to in-person mental health care may vary by location.

What concerns can therapists help with?

Therapists can help with a wide range of concerns, including anxiety and stress, depression, trauma and PTSD, self-esteem and identity, people-pleasing and fear of rejection, insomnia and racing thoughts, workplace stress and burnout, substance use, parenting and co-parenting stress, grief and loss, and relationship and family challenges. Therapists on BetterHelp may draw on approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), depending on your needs and goals. You can explore support for specific concerns on pages such as generalized anxiety disorder, major depressive disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, and eating disorders.

Please note that therapists on BetterHelp do not provide psychiatric medication management or formal diagnoses.

Online therapy vs. in-person therapy in Virginia

Online therapy and in-person therapy both connect you with a licensed professional, and the main difference is how you meet. In Virginia, online therapy through BetterHelp lets you have sessions by phone, video, or in-app messaging, so you can meet from home or on a schedule that fits your life. In-person therapy takes place at an office and may involve travel and set appointment windows. Online therapy may be more accessible for people with busy schedules, limited transportation, or a preference for a more discreet setting. Both formats can support meaningful progress, so the right choice often comes down to what fits your life.
