I have been a therapist for 25 years and I feel that people know what's best and what they want for themselves. Many times they don't know how to get there though and need help, support and confidence in themselves to find their way. There are so many variables that get in the way including various forms of abuse, mental health issues, family issues, drug/alcohol addiction and abuse to name a few. I love to help clients work through their issues, restore confidence in themselves and look forward to their future! I am more of a client centered therapist and use mostly Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and use some Existential Therapy. I love it when clients tell me "I come from a dysfunctional family." My response is always the same. Show me a functional family because I'm not sure one exists, especially in our present world! The point is that every family has some dysfunction, but there various degrees of dysfunction. Some are much worse than others. Let's talk the dysfunction(s)that has affected you the most! As a therapist it is so rewarding to help clients work through their issues and concerns and watch the positive changes start happening. We have so much available now to help clients with mental health concerns including therapy, medications, inpatient treatment and some very good outpatient treatment. If a person feels ashamed they have a mental health issue they shouldn't. It's very common and nothing to hide. Getting help is taking charge of your life!!

Thankyou for reading my profile. It is difficult to convey my work in few paragraphs. I have been counseling since 1998 when I completed my first master's degree in Counseling. I later earned a second masters in Clinical Social Work. I understand that change is not easy and I know that no single approach to change works for everyone. With this in mind, I am willing to draw upon a number of modalities. I use techniques from mindfulness and gratitude along with traditional Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, Reality Therapy to develop a plan of growth. I am always in partnership, working alongside the client and family as we move towards health. I believe that the client is the authority or expert with regard to their goals and needs. I follow the client's lead in developing those goals while offering my expertise in creating a successful plan. I also believe that focusing on a whole person strength-based relationship contributes to a solid base of trust and acceptance. With this solid therapeutic relationship established, the client can feel safe to be authentic and vulnerable.

Are you feeling stuck? Therapy is a risky interpersonal adventure; it takes courage to meet yourself in a new way. The anxiety is worth facing safely and discretely. An investment in yourself pays the most significant and long-lasting dividends inside and out. You are unique, your story is unique, and your situation is unique. Yet, many of the things we struggle with are common, internal, and relational struggles that are resolvable with a new awareness and the power of a trusting relationship. My goal is to honor your commitment to your unique vision and healthy relationships. With your willingness and dedication, I hope to take the journey with you to a different level of YOU that is ready and waiting to emerge. You deserve to meet that undiscovered self that can open your life to new possibilities and vibrant relationships. Your transformation is waiting... I am a licensed marriage and family therapist, licensed since 1981 and blessed in my journey to have been trusted enough to help others grow in their lives. I am a get to work type person and can be pretty direct in my approach in a what I hope is also a kind, understanding and caring approach. I believe in education, because knowledge is power and learning new skills to manage the bumps in the road of life is important. I try to see what might be most helpful for people based on their views and what they believe and their hopes and goals. I am well trained in trauma informed treatment, cognitive behavioral therapy, family systems and dialectical therapy. I believe those approaches provide both skills and understanding to help a person move forward when they seem to be stuck, which truly happens to us all. I look forward to seeing how we can partner to unstick you and help you move forward in this journey called life.

Garlena Rumsey
My name is Garlena Rumsey, and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in Idaho. I am a Qualified Mental Health Professional (QMHP) in Oregon. I live in a border town in Idaho and Oregon is 4 miles away. I specialize in trauma with a certification of Clinical Counselor Trauma Professional 1 (CCTP-1). I work with a variety of diagnoses: PTSD, depression, anxiety, fears, abuse, substance abuse, and sexuality issues. Populations include adolescents, young adults, adults, the elderly, LGBTQ, sex offenders, and the developmentally challenged. I have worked with adolescents in different settings, shelter care, foster care, and group homes. I utilize CBT, Art, Games, and Narratives depending on the individual. Everyone is unique and one type of therapy may not work for another individual. A relationship is important to working with adolescents. Trying to navigate through the world as it is now can be extremely difficult. Couples counseling utilizing CBT, Art, Narratives, and homework creates knowledge and improves relationships. Honesty is important in working together for a better relationship. The mental health of each individual creates education and understanding. Setting boundaries with each other, learning to communicate, and utilizing active listening skills to be obtained. I am a Christian and give all the glory to God for bringing me to this place in my life. I feel I am guided in my work and focus on treating everyone with respect and dignity. I am culturally diverse in my approach and will not turn anyone away from doing counseling with me unless I feel I cannot help in any way. I believe God brings people together and if we are brought together, it must be a God thing. I am accepting of religions different than mine and consider myself spiritual rather than religious.
