I am a licensed professional counselor (LPC) and a National Certified Counselor, ( NCC) with other 30 years experience in both counseling and education. I started my professional career as an elementary special education teacher in the early 80's. I obtained my M.Ed in counselor Education in 1989 from the University of Arkansas and in 1989 I went to Alaska for the first time as along term substitute teacher. I worked in the Bering Strait School District, in Unalakleet, Alaska. I would return a year later, and work a total of 11 years as a teacher, itinerant school counselor, and village school principal in the district. I would go on to work in two other school districts before retiring from Alaska in 2004. After returning to Arkansas, and home, I worked as a kindergarten counselor in a center with 180 kids and 18 teachers. I fully retired in 2007. In 2009, I became a military and family life counselor and have been doing this for 10 years. My treatment approach is based on my training and my personality. I was trained in CCT and it fite my style, even though I so specialize in crisis counseling. I have found helping the client, and not necessarily directing the client is more effective for me. As I stated I specialize in crisis and PTSD counseling right now with the military, and their families.

Hi, I am Theresa Presley and I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the state of Missouri and Kansas. I have been practicing social work for 14 years. I have worked in a variety of settings to include inpatient/outpatient mental health, domestic violence and private practice. I work with a variety of ages and various populations. Much of my experience has been working with people who are struggling with depression, anxiety, trauma, LGBTQ+ issues, and the challenges of parenting. I work with a Strength-based theory using elements of Cognitive Behavioral Theory. I try to build a strong, trusting relationship with each client and help them understand the connection between their thoughts, feelings and actions. The feedback I receive from clients is that they find me to be caring, warm, empathetic, nonjudgmental and a good listener. Life can sometimes be tough; sometimes, we have to ask for help. I understand that this is hard; but together we will focus on your strengths to get you through this difficult time and come out even stronger.

Welcome, I have been a mental health counselor since 2011. In that time I have worked with diverse groups of people in a wide array of settings. I began practicing therapy during my graduate program in the counseling center through a graduate assistantship. Working at the university provided me a unique opportunity to practice therapy with individuals during a pivotal stage of development when many are expected to function as an adult, yet be treated in many ways as a child. Once I finished with my degree (2013) I stayed on at the university counseling center part time, and was hired on at a children’s acute psychiatric facility (ages 4-17). There, I provided individual, group, and family therapy to my patients. While there I also conducted assessments on patients exhibiting sexually maladaptive behaviors and determined the most appropriate and safe placement upon discharge. Through my work with children and families in an acute setting, I witnessed the impact generational trauma has on individuals and families. I have a deep understanding of family systems and attachment theory, and how to begin and work through a way to heal. I value the process of my clients learning how to navigate their lives with insight into how their past experiences influenced their attachment style so they are better able to identify and meet their needs with more ease and confidence. I opened my private practice in Springfield, Missouri in 2018 when I realized the real need in my community for a secular clinician specializing in sexual and gender identity and religious trauma. Springfield is referred to as “the buckle of the Bible Belt,” and the overlap of LGBTQIA+ folks who suffer from religious trauma (like many other places in the world) is staggering. Many of my clients have emerged from puritanical upbringings, and/or Covid, feeling ready to explore their sexuality and gender identity. I believe everyone deserves a space to be heard with compassion and free from judgement. I approach each client as an individual with unique needs who deserves respect and to be treated with dignity and compassion. With experience and empathy I validate and process struggles with a client so as to clear a path forward with less pain, shame, and fear. When someone can come to session with an open mind and a willingness to explore their thoughts and feelings with me (even in unconventional ways) amazing insights can come into focus. With that comes confidence in the client's own ability to recognize their needs and realize their goals. I enjoy working with those motivated to makes changes and improve their own reality. Sometimes this means big leaps and brave actions and other times it means major shifts in perspective. I am so glad that you are here and look forward to meeting with you!

I’m so glad that you are reaching out to find help in this chaotic world we are living in! So many people choose to live in “anxious mode”, but by taking this first step, we can work toward changing your life to “happy and stress-free mode”. I started my journey as a behavior disorders teacher turned elementary school counselor. After retirement, I continued my career and followed my dream of earning my license and opening my own counseling practice. In my practice I have worked with all ages dealing with various issues such as post traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, grief, depression, family relationships, abuse, divorce, and couples therapy. I also worked with many clients referred from the Division of Family Services relating to parenting skills and child abuse/neglect. I love helping people change their mindset from “I can’t take this anymore!” to “Oh, life is good after all!” Sometimes another person’s perspective on situations helps volumes, and that is what I do. I help offer solutions using a variety of techniques in a non-judgmental and compassionate way. My style includes Behavior-focused therapy, Person-centered therapy, and Reality therapy, with some Mindfulness all rolled in together to fit your personal needs and unique personality. I love life, and each day is an adventure-I hope that I can help you on your journey to find this same love of life!

Hello, thanking you for taking the time to read my profile. There are hundreds of very capable counselors available. I believe that it's important to find the right counselor that's a fit for you. After all, the hallmark of counseling is the therapeutic relationship. I have been a licensed professional counselor for ten years, with emphasis on crisis intervention, depression/anxiety, anger management and abuse. I am the published author of Breaking the Silence from Shame- my journey to healing from spiritual abuse. My personal theory of counseling is that people have the tools it takes to make the desired change. It's embedded in them! Many times people lose sight of what's in them because of the hurt, pain, shame, and disappointment. My job is to plant seeds of hope, encouragement, empowerment and motivation. My approach is very down to earth. I look forward to going on this journey with you to help bring about the results that you would like to see in your life.

Thankfully, I consider myself blessed to have never “worked” a day in my life. I started over 25 years ago providing clinical social work to abused and neglected children and adolescents. Over the years, I have worked with multiple populations in rural and urban settings with low and high incomes. I diagnose and provide therapy to all age ranges, children to seniors. The diversity of the populations I work with include children, adolescents, adults, couples, LGBTQIA, veterans, and families. I have extensive training in PTSD and trauma informed care and continue to work with survivors of sexual assault, abuse and neglect; survivors of domestic violence; and persons in recovery from or believe they have a problem with alcohol, drugs or food. My no nonsense, yet warm and accepting approach is what my clients say they like most about me. Over the years I have helped people heal from the past and deal with current situations that cause them distress, depression, anxiety or fear. Allow me to put my experience to work for you. Yes, I have 2 Masters degrees and I am independently licensed in 2 states, but what I really have to offer is life experience applying evidence based models in a way that meets you were YOU are, not where I want you to be. If you think it is time to some work, then I am ready to help you feel better about you, your choices and your life.

As you search for just the ” right” counselor, the task may seem overwhelming. ” Will I like them?” ” Will they like me?” ” Will anyone ever understand?” ” Will they really be able to help me?” The list of concerns may seem exhausting. I have over thirty years of experience but I don’t have all the answers. I have never met YOU. I have never heard YOUR hopes and dreams and life story. What I do know from my training, professional experience, and life experience is that counseling works. There is no magic pill to ” fix ” your issues but with honesty, understanding, empathy, and proven methods, we can work together to make positive changes. Probably the most important element in a client/counselor relationship is trust. I want you to feel secure in the knowledge that you are entering a safe place. You will not be judged. I will treat you with compassion, understanding, and respect. I have been a son, brother, husband, father, employee, employer, and friend. I know how complicated life and relationships can be because I’ve been there. In my spare time, I enjoy camping, backpacking, music, biking, and photography. I have frequent visits from wildlife and I’m a pet lover. I have a Master’s degree in Psychology and have extensive training in trauma. substance abuse disorders, marriage counseling, mindfulness, and adolescent behavior disorders. I look forward to meeting you.

How to find counseling in Cosby

Finding the best therapist close by in Cosby can feel challenging, but know that once you narrow your search for a counselor serving your area, you can find a therapist in your city that is accepting new clients and fits your goals. Whether you're struggling with depression, anxiety, marriage, family issues, or other emotional challenges, feel proud that you have begun your search to find the mental health care services that work best for you in order to begin your personal journey towards emotional healing.

Understanding the type of therapy you'd like to search for is crucial before finding a therapist or psychologist in Cosby. Perhaps you're interested in narrowing your search for a psychotherapist that can offer psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), talk therapy, provide group therapy, marriage and family therapy for individuals or couples, or couples therapy. Each type of therapy can offer various benefits and address or treat different disorders. If you're still unsure or are new to counseling in Cosby, feel free to contact the provider via email to find out which methods they practice.

It is also important to understand that mental health professionals in the United States are accredited to provide care, helping individuals and couples, with a variety of licenses. These include licensed marriage and family therapist (LMFT), licensed clinical social worker (LCSW), and clinical psychologist or doctor of psychology (PsyD). Regardless of their licensure, they are trained to treat individuals and couples counseling, and sometimes children, in any type of therapy. Find a therapist under any of these distinctions and know that the sessions they offer can provide a safe place to heal.

Mental health professionals working through their own in- person therapy practice in Cosby or online may assist clients in improving healthy relationships, communication skills, working through life transitions, managing a mood disorder, improving coping skills, or change in negative thinking patterns. They may also provide a safe place and validation for clients experiencing emotional pain. Verified providers can provide licensed marriage and couples therapy, tailor to individual needs, and create a therapeutic relationship as a National Certified Counselor.

There are all kinds of therapists working with clients today across the United States and in the greater Cosby area in different types of therapy, including:

  • CBT
  • DBT
  • Substance use therapy
  • Couples therapy

When you're ready to start your search and find therapists, have in mind what type of therapy you'd like your provider to be most experienced with and choose an experienced provider with a practice located near you in the city of Cosby, elsewhere in Andrew, or in the greater state of Missouri.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Some other commonly asked questions on therapy with a licensed counselor and BetterHelp serving the Cosby area can be found below:

How does the cost of in-person counseling compare to the cost of BetterHelp with a licensed Cosby therapist?

The average price of an in-person therapy session in the US is $100 to $200 per hour. These prices may be higher in Cosby due to a higher cost of living. The price also depends on the type of provider you are looking for. See the following average prices for various mental health providers without insurance:

  • Counseling with a psychiatrist: $150-$500
  • Counseling with therapists: $100-300
  • Therapy with a psychologist: $100

While many psychologists in Cosby may not take health insurance, some in the state of Missouri may work on a sliding scale, meaning they'll factor in your income and charge what you can afford per session. With BetterHelp or clinicians throughout the state of Missouri you can expect significantly more affordable options, with sessions ranging from $65 to $100 per week (billed every four weeks).

How is a licensed therapist on this online therapy platform verified?

Therapists in Cosby, Missouri working on BetterHelp are licensed, trained, experienced, and accredited as a doctor of psychology (PhD / PsyD), licensed marriage and family therapists (LMFT), licensed clinical social worker (LCSW / LICSW), or licensed professional counselors (LPC). All of these psychology clinicians have a Masters Degree or a Doctorate Degree in their field of psychology sciences, and follow the APA Code of Ethics. They have been qualified and certified by their state's professional board after successfully completing the necessary education, exams, training and practice with a patient, and extensive experience in a healthcare clinic or treatment centers, in order to become a mental health provider. While their lived experience, expertise, careers, and background vary, they all possess at least 3 years and 1,000 hours of hands-on experience with adult and sometimes teen patients, and have the necessary therapist credentials to provide a safe space for long lasting emotional healing in therapy.

Please note BetterHelp does not offer or provide care from psychiatrists to prescribe a drug as treatment, or perform psychological assessments.

How does working with a counselor in BetterHelp online therapy sessions work?

BetterHelp clinicians treat clients online across the United States (individuals and couples) through life transitions, inner child exploration, long term depression or anxiety, and more. An online mental health professional, including the therapists in Cosby above, can work with young adults, children, adolescents, and adults virtually as an accredited licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) or licensed marriage and family therapist (LMFT). You do not have to commute to a an office as a psychotherapy client.

Through BetterHelp therapy, you can partake in video, phone, or live chat therapy sessions with your licensed therapist. You can work through various symptoms, use the in app journaling feature, and receive worksheets. Specialties on BetterHelp include:

You may also be struggling with relationship problems that could be addressed in couples therapy or with a sex therapist. In that case, you may choose to work with one of BetterHelp's experienced cognitive-behavioral therapists or licensed marriage family therapists (LMFT) who work with clients in relationships. You can also try a Cosby therapy provider through BetterHelp's sister platform, ReGain, which is dedicated to couples and spouses worldwide.

How do I know if online counseling is right for my family?

One of the potentially rewarding aspects of working with a therapist is the validation and active listening they can provide. Your friends and loved ones may also be available to listen, but you may feel that they may lack the skills to provide objective guidance. Counselors are trained to respond to various concerns, symptoms, and mental health conditions.

A psychologist in your city can support you toward a healthier emotional state, regardless of your mental health, life concerns, or healing needs. While supporting individuals in developing healthier habits, another good benefit of therapy is having an understanding, safe space with a non-judgmental party who can support you through challenging experiences.

Many people have sensitive topics that they may feel ashamed to discuss with their friends or partner. A Cosby therapist can help you confront these concerns and open up through unique methods of support. There are also many types of therapy, such as art therapy, where you may find you can express yourself through creativity instead of words.

With a lot of people in MO, providers may be booked out with clients. Through the list of profiles above and others within BetterHelp's team, you may be able to find a psychologist within 24 to 48 hours. If you're searching to find a a nearby psychotherapist close to 64436 or the surrounding zip codes, consider others available through the BetterHelp site. No matter if you are seeking help in your area or beyond, online therapy can be a great option.

How should I prepare for my first therapy session with a Cosby counselor?

Before seeing your therapist, prep for your session by reading to understand the therapy process. You might write a list of questions you want to ask your psychotherapist, any emotional pain you may feel, and the ways in which you hope to improve. When you attend your session, let them know if you have any concerns about therapy or feel unsure about what to talk about. They may help guide you with open-ended therapeutic questions. The first session will often serve as an intake to get to know you as a person and learn why you're attending therapy.

Should I find a therapist or psychologist if I feel fine?

Some simply don't feel the need to see a psychologist. However, some people may avoid attending therapy due to stigma or preconceived notions of what therapy entails. Although psychologists often support people with mental health conditions, you do not need a diagnosis or condition to attend therapy. You can discuss grief, relationship concerns, stress, or life changes and ask for general feedback and advice. A Cosby licensed clinical social worker may help you gain power over your life and emotions while you navigate day-to-day experiences.

Gaining a new perspective on yourself through various therapies might allow you to improve your self-esteem, work through relationships, and gain a better sense of your mental health goals. The success you may find through therapy can be dependent on your process.

People may also attend therapy for specific motives, such as bullying, an autism diagnosis, a desire to learn mindfulness meditation, personality concerns, trouble with office workers, specific phobias, and many other principles.

Is mental health care and therapy worth it?

Therapy is effective and has the power to change individuals' lives. Each client is at a different stage of their emotional healing journey in life, as each human can be unique in their personality, expression, skills, and goals. A psychologist can target various symptoms, experiences, and personalities to help you feel your best and put you on the path to healing. Unlike advice from a friend, family, or non-professional, a mental health professional has an understanding of various disorders like ADHD and depression with many hours of experience in treating adults in their practice. For this reason, seeing an evidence based psychologist in Cosby, Missouri can be worth it. Over 41 million adults in the US attend therapy services each year, showing it's a popular option and is proven to be effective.

Cosby has many clinicians who practice person or client-centered individual therapy in-person and through online therapy to assist clients in their healing journey. If you opt into online therapy, you might also be able to meet with providers all over the United States and change therapists easily at any time. Many people struggling with anxiety and depression, substance abuse, body image issues, and more find therapists that are a good fit for them, feel supported, and gain further insight into their lives through internet-based therapy.

Do therapists judge you in therapy sessions?

The boundaries between you and a therapist are in place to help you and them regarding ethical concerns. Mental health professionals are held by ethical standards through the American Psychological Association (APA) and are not allowed to judge or harm their clients. If you are concerned about sharing details about yourself, feel free to withhold personal information. Their job in the therapeutic relationship is to create a safe place, help you gain a deeper understanding of your mental health, and support you. You might consider changing counselors if you don't feel safe or respected.
