Laura Scales
It is my sincere hope to bring genuine healing and wholeness to individuals, marriages and families. What is perhaps unique about me is that therapy is not my first career. I feel as though my other careers and life experiences have led me to this time in my life and my practice. I have learned first hand how unexpected life events can throw one off course and how going through change can be painful and yet transformational. In my previous careers, I chose occupations that enabled and empowered others. I cared for people with chronic illness and severe disabilities as a home health aide. I taught rock climbing, ice climbing, sea kayaking, swimming at various levels with a diverse clientele. I cared for the elderly and brought activities to improve the quality of life for residents of a senior living community. One of my greatest life achievements is climbing the highest point in the western hemisphere, Mt. Aconcagua elevation 22,837 ft. Up above the treeline, looking down on the clouds, far away from the civilized world is where I felt the most centered and at peace and the closest to my higher self. It is during my days as a climber and high altitude mountaineer that I learned how to be fully present in life if only for one moment at a time. It was in graduate school at Argosy University, on the Denver, Colorado campus that I realized how to continue to follow my passion: helping others build stronger sense of self and healthy relationships and families. After completing a masters program in Marriage and Family Therapy and practicum at West Springs Psychiatric Hospital, I worked in a community mental health outpatient clinic. As a licensed professional, I counseled as an intake, individual and group therapist. My knowledge and empathy has grown significantly while working with people of all ages and backgrounds, addressing a broad range of mental health issues. Today in my private practice, I strive to provide a safe nonjudgemental space for clients to share openly, explore problems and solutions and shed light on relationships, that are no longer desirable. I believe our mental health and personal well being are tied up in the quality of our personal relationships. The more closely we are connected to others, the happier we feel and the more personal satisfaction we have in our lives. I work with individuals, couples and families who want to change how they manage conflict, physical and mental health conditions, and stressful life adjustments. I have been trained in many evidence-based therapy modalities that help me to be effective in treating depression, anxiety, relationship and family issues, anger management and people who have experienced trauma. I believe in empowering clients, meaning that the client is the expert on their life and responsible and capable of making their own decisions. My approach to counseling involves evidenced-based practices to include Internal Family Systems Therapy, cognitive behavior therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, solution focussed and strength-based practices tailored to fit each client's uniques needs. When I am not practicing therapy I am enjoying spending as much time as possible in the natural world absorbing all of it's many gifts.

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), am licensed and currently live in the state of Colorado, although I also maintain my LCSW licensure in Texas. I studied at the University of Texas at Austin for both my undergraduate (BSW) and graduate degrees (MSSW) in Social Work. Since graduating with my Master of Science in Social Work (MSSW) in 2003, I have worked with couples, families, and children in a variety of settings, to include non-profit organizations, schools, hospitals, and for the military. Most of my experience is in the field of trauma, helping families who have been exposed to violence – either abuse, domestic and sexual violence, exposure to some other type of disaster, as well as combat trauma. I am certified in three evidence based trauma therapies, Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and Prolonged Exposure Therapy (PE). I also have experience and a passion for working with couples, doing marriage and family therapy, and helping families resolve conflict, increase intimacy, and improve or sustain healthy relationships. I believe one of the most important and key indicators of successful treatment is the therapeutic relationship, so it is important to me to build trust and ensure that working together is the right fit.

Over the twenty plus years that I have been a mental health therapist, I have worked with individuals and groups needing help with anxiety, depression, grief and loss, trauma, PTSD, substance abuse and relationship issues, LGBT issues, self-esteem, self-care, and communication. The therapeutic models I use in my work are a strength based focus, acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), mindfulness, dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and client-centered therapy. A major part of the work that we will do together is learning to live our best valued life, building psychological flexibility to handle the challenges that this life sets before us. The most important gift any of us can have is the security of knowing that we have the tools that we need to deal with whatever challenges this life hands us. Antoinette Gooden
Hello, Welcome to the Better Help Community. My name is Antoinette and I am a licensed professional counselor in Colorado, Georgia, Kentucky, Missouri, Kansas, South Dakota, Virginia, and Texas. I have been working in the mental health field for over 20 years. I have worked with individuals experiencing a variety of issues including grief and loss, depression, anxiety, marital concerns, women issues, workplace stressors, family conflict, and issues related to military families. I would describe my approach as goal-oriented, and client-centered. I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT). Both modalities are hands-on, practical approaches to problem-solving. CBT treatment usually involves efforts to change thinking patterns and or behaviors. The goals are to change patterns of thinking or behavior that are behind difficult situations, and so change the way one feels. This helps people identify unhelpful ways of thinking as they learn better ways of coping with life's stressors. It would be my privilege to become a partner in your journey while helping you to figure out your goals. I will provide a supportive and understanding environment that offers a clear direction with specific strategies to assist with your current stressors. I look forward to helping/serving you!

How should I prepare for my first therapy session with a Florence counselor?
Before seeing your Florence therapist, prep for your session by reading to understand the therapy process. You might write a list of questions you want to ask your psychotherapist, any emotional pain you may feel, and the ways in which you hope to improve. When you attend your session, you can let our therapists know if you have any concerns about therapy or feel unsure about what to talk about. Florence therapists here may help guide you with open-ended therapeutic questions while offering mental health services. The first session will often serve as an intake to get to know you as a person and learn why you're attending therapy in Florence.
Should I find a therapist or psychologist for therapy if I feel fine?
Some simply don't feel the need to see a psychologist. However, some people may avoid attending therapy due to stigma or preconceived notions of what therapy entails. Although psychologists often support people with mental health conditions, you do not need a diagnosis or condition to attend therapy. You can discuss grief, relationship concerns, stress, or life changes and ask for general feedback and advice from a therapist. A Florence licensed clinical social worker may help you gain power over your life and emotions while you navigate day-to-day experiences.
Gaining a new perspective on yourself through various therapies might allow you to improve your self-esteem, work through relationships, and gain a better sense of your mental health goals. The success you may find through therapy with a Florence counselor can be dependent on your process.
People may also attend therapy for specific motives, such as bullying, an autism diagnosis, a desire to learn mindfulness meditation, personality concerns, trouble with office workers, specific phobias, and many other principles that a counselor can help with.
Is mental health care and therapy with a therapist worth it?
Therapy with a licensed counselor is effective and has the power to change individuals' lives. Each client is at a different stage of their emotional healing journey in life, as each human can be unique in their personality, expression, skills, and goals. A psychologist can target various symptoms, experiences, and personalities to help you feel your best and put you on the path to healing. Unlike advice from a friend, family, or non-professional, a mental health therapist has an understanding of various disorders like ADHD and depression with many hours of experience in treating adults in their practice. For this reason, seeing an evidence based psychologist in Florence, Colorado can be worth it. Over 41 million adults in the US attend therapy services each year, showing it's a popular option and is proven to be effective.
Florence has many clinicians who practice person or client-centered individual therapy in-person and through online therapy to assist clients in their healing journey. If you opt into online therapy, you might also be able to meet with providers all over the United States and change therapists easily at any time. Many people struggling with anxiety and depression, substance abuse, body image issues, and more find therapists that are a good fit for them, feel supported, and gain further insight into their lives through internet-based therapy.
Do therapists judge you in therapy sessions during telehealth appointments?
The boundaries between you and a therapist are in place to help you and them regarding ethical concerns. Mental health professionals are held by ethical standards through the American Psychological Association (APA) and are not allowed to judge or harm their clients. If you are concerned about sharing details about yourself, feel free to withhold personal information. Their job in the therapeutic relationship is to create a safe place, help you gain a deeper understanding of your mental health, and support you. You might consider changing counselors if you don't feel safe or respected.
