Greetings, I am a licensed clinical professional counselor in the state of Maryland. My experience includes over one decade of assisting persons related to career difficulties, the loss of a loved one to suicide, the loss of sight and sound, life changes (planned and unplanned), criminal justice involvement (including sex offenses), moving forward after being a victim of a crime, caring for elderly parents as well as loved ones of all ages who have special needs. In addition, I am experienced in assisting persons who have the Highly Sensitive Person (HSP) trait/ Sensory Processing Sensitivity, need help establishing boundaries, and in identifying techniques for dealing with people different from themselves (politically, economically, etc.) as well as with those who are simply difficult. While I can assist clients with almost any life circumstance, I am the counselor for the client who wants to take a goal oriented approach to better mental health. My focus is to empower clients through their circumstance by affording organization, strategy and a host of therapeutic interventions. This means, if you decide to work with me, you are ready to build an action plan, set goals and do homework.
My motto: better is possible. Better coping, outcomes, focus, relationships, etc. is possible.

I use a combination of cognitive behavior therapy, (which involves assessing thoughts, feelings, and behaviors then developing ways to make changes in those areas to feel and function better), Solution Focused Therapy (focusing more on how to move forward instead of how an issue arose), Rational Emotive therapy (a direct approach that includes teaching and supporting) as well as the client-centered approach (meaning that I help you find solutions on your own). Additionally, case management is a large part of my work resulting in resource recommendations to help you meet your goals.
I have a master's degree in Rehabilitation Counseling. I served as a counselor to persons who were court involved. I was an employment union chapter representative assisting people in processing their emotions and developing action plans to confront workplace injustices. I served as a hotline and mobile crisis team counselor, during which I met with clients in the community. In addition, I facilitated a support group for persons who lost loved ones to suicide.

I am here to empower and help you, not judge you. I desire to help you eradicate limiting thoughts, feelings, and behaviors so you can achieve your goals.
I am available during the day and evenings. In addition, I reserve weekly time slots upon request. Further, I respond to all correspondence sent Monday through Thursday within 24 hours. For correspondence sent Friday through Sunday, I respond by Monday. I encourage regular text communication between sessions. I offer all session types; video sessions are offered upon request.

Welcome to Better Help Counseling! Please give yourself credit for taking this difficult and important step towards improving your health and your life. I most certainly give you credit. I know it is not always easy to open up to someone that you don't really know. So, Big Time Congratulations on having the courage to do something that will be both valuable and helpful for you and quite possibly those around you as well. My name is Linda Johannisson. I am a Licensed Certified Social Worker-Clinical (L.C.S.W.-C.) in the state of Maryland. I earned my Masters of Social Work degree in 1994 from the School of Social Work at the University of Maryland, with a subspecialty in Mental Health. For over 26 years I have practiced as a therapist in many settings, from the fast-paced environment of the Emergency Room to the more relaxed setting of Private Practice. I have had the honor of working with individuals, couples, families, adolescents, veterans, the homeless and medically complex care patients. These clients brought a wide range of concerns including depression, anxiety (including PTSD), relationship issues, parenting problems, family conflict, alcohol, drug, food, and behavioral addictions, grief and loss, anger management, emotional abuse, career challenges and more. Additionally, I have had two other careers which afford me a great broad perspective and ability to understand life from a non-therapist view. In 1978, I graduated from San Diego State University, CA with Bachelor’s of Art in Telecommunications & Film, with a Minor in Spanish. I worked as a producer and writer at the local ABC Television station in San Diego and learned many skills including video competence, the importance of knowing my audience and the impact of emotional connection. In 1984 I graduated from Officer’s Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island and worked on the beginnings of the Internet. I learned many skills including computer proficiency, the importance of being prompt and available. My second duty assignment was as the Admiral’s Aide at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. Again I learned many skills such as the ability to work with people from different countries and cultures from all over the world and the importance of attention to detail. Because your experiences are unique, I will do my best to meet you where you are. I want what is best for you just as much as you do! As a therapist I strive to be supportive, empathetic, validating, and comfortable to talk with because when sharing private thoughts or fragile topics it is imperative that you feel at ease and safe. Additionally, I will help you set individual and realistic goals. Adjectives that might describe my style are: engaged, respectful, down to earth, relaxed, practical, mindful, insight-oriented, and solution focused. I lean more towards a collaborative, engaging and interactive approach so that feel you are not doing all the talking. I do my best to go at your pace and have a youthful, somewhat playful demeanor. I honor your innate intelligence and know that when you look within, you gain confidence in yourself and your choices. At times I might recommend reading a short book, or give you a handout, or have your complete a creative assignment to deepen your process between sessions. If you believe in balancing mind, body, and spirit, then we might be a good fit for each other, as each is essential to the healing process. Finally, it is important to me that you feel better after meeting with me. I offer my warm welcome and offer my help to get you on your path to health, happiness, self confidence and peace.

How should I prepare for my first therapy session with a Martins Additions counselor?

Before seeing your Martins Additions therapist, prep for your session by reading to understand the therapy process. You might write a list of questions you want to ask your psychotherapist, any emotional pain you may feel, and the ways in which you hope to improve. When you attend your session, let them know if you have any concerns about therapy or feel unsure about what to talk about. They may help guide you with open-ended therapeutic questions while offering mental health services. The first session will often serve as an intake to get to know you as a person and learn why you're attending therapy in Martins Additions.

Should I find a therapist or psychologist for therapy if I feel fine?

Some simply don't feel the need to see a psychologist. However, some people may avoid attending therapy due to stigma or preconceived notions of what therapy entails. Although psychologists often support people with mental health conditions, you do not need a diagnosis or condition to attend therapy. You can discuss grief, relationship concerns, stress, or life changes and ask for general feedback and advice from a therapist. A Martins Additions licensed clinical social worker may help you gain power over your life and emotions while you navigate day-to-day experiences.

Gaining a new perspective on yourself through various therapies might allow you to improve your self-esteem, work through relationships, and gain a better sense of your mental health goals. The success you may find through therapy with a Martins Additions counselor can be dependent on your process.

People may also attend therapy for specific motives, such as bullying, an autism diagnosis, a desire to learn mindfulness meditation, personality concerns, trouble with office workers, specific phobias, and many other principles that a counselor can help with.

Is mental health care and therapy with a therapist worth it?

Therapy with a licensed counselor is effective and has the power to change individuals' lives. Each client is at a different stage of their emotional healing journey in life, as each human can be unique in their personality, expression, skills, and goals. A psychologist can target various symptoms, experiences, and personalities to help you feel your best and put you on the path to healing. Unlike advice from a friend, family, or non-professional, a mental health therapist has an understanding of various disorders like ADHD and depression with many hours of experience in treating adults in their practice. For this reason, seeing an evidence based psychologist in Martins Additions, Maryland can be worth it. Over 41 million adults in the US attend therapy services each year, showing it's a popular option and is proven to be effective.

Martins Additions has many clinicians who practice person or client-centered individual therapy in-person and through online therapy to assist clients in their healing journey. If you opt into online therapy, you might also be able to meet with providers all over the United States and change therapists easily at any time. Many people struggling with anxiety and depression, substance abuse, body image issues, and more find therapists that are a good fit for them, feel supported, and gain further insight into their lives through internet-based therapy.

Do therapists judge you in therapy sessions during telehealth appointments?

The boundaries between you and a therapist are in place to help you and them regarding ethical concerns. Mental health professionals are held by ethical standards through the American Psychological Association (APA) and are not allowed to judge or harm their clients. If you are concerned about sharing details about yourself, feel free to withhold personal information. Their job in the therapeutic relationship is to create a safe place, help you gain a deeper understanding of your mental health, and support you. You might consider changing counselors if you don't feel safe or respected.
