Karen Kavaloski
Hello, my name is Karen Kavaloski and I am a LPC in New Mexico, North Carolina and in Missouri. I was originally licensed as a counselor in 2009 while working in Arizona by the State of North Carolina after making a career change from a almost 30 year history in nursing. My passion since I was a young adult was counseling and it took me almost 30 years to achieve my goal of becoming a counselor. I was a Marine wife for almost 30 years and have traveled allot, I have 3 children and 5 grandchildren. My youngest, a son, and one of my grandchildren are severely autistic so I can identify with the stress and struggles some families have with managing special needs within their family. I am also a cancer survivor. I believe we all have an ability to heal the body, mind and soul and I consciously strive daily to be an active participant in my life and support and encourage others to do the same. My education beyond my nursing and counseling includes a Masters in Business Administration and a Doctorate in (Christian) Ministries. I have worked primarily over this past 17 years with trauma and substance abuse in the adult population with about 3 years working with the teenage population in these areas. I also have worked about 5 years total with prison reentry and counseling individuals and families with histories of incarceration in state and federal prison. I believe in working with individuals and families to achieve their highest goals. I believe the client is the expert in his/her own life and I fully encourage one to strive to work towards building a strong foundation within themselves and their families whatever that looks like to them, to that end I use focused solution therapy, internal systems therapy, mindfulness/compassion therapy, cognitive and cognitive behavioral, dialectical therapy, emotional freedom techniques and/or neurolinguistic techniques . I am also the author and publisher self help books under my Sacred Self Workbook Series Outside my therapy practice, I spend my leisure time reading. meditation/praying and gardening. I do light exercise daily.

Most people face challenges in their lives and I believe sharing those difficulties with a professional counselor can be one of the best ways to overcome any obstacle. Whether the challenge is big or small, mental health therapy can help you find the answers you seek. Often, people just need to be heard and validated for their emotions or they want a sounding board off which to bounce possible decisions. Some might not want to share their thoughts and feelings with another person in their life for fear of being judged. Others may be dealing with concerns related to anxiety, depression, addiction, PTSD or women's issues. Whatever your reasons are for seeking therapy, I would like to walk with you on your journey to better mental and emotional health. My approach to therapy is person-centered, which means you have the power to find solutions that work best for you. You can expect me to listen and empower you to promote healing and change without judgement. Through a solution-focused lens, we will discover and use your strengths to accomplish your goals. In addition, I use Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) so that we can discover the relationships between your thoughts, feelings and behaviors and how these are contributing to any challenges you are facing today. My goal is to encourage you to become the best version of yourself in a judgment-free environment. On a personal note, I am a small business owner and clients from my Authentic Living Counseling practice will also use this platform. I am passionate about helping people overcome mental health and addiction issues by assisting them in achieving their personal goals. I look forward to meeting you.

I completed my Master of Social Work degree in April of 1998 while working full-time . I had begun volunteering at a domestic violence shelter and was looking at methods for helping these at -risk families. My first job post Master's degree was working in the foster care system. That led me to a better understanding of child welfare, family dynamics, and the legal system. I then moved back to my hometown in northeast Michigan to work as an infant mental health specialist. This opportunity gave me more skill in working with trauma, family therapy, and being comfortable in the client's own home. My work at the local hospital's behavioral health services expanded my ability to provide individual psychotherapy to people of all ages and background. I also developed proficiancy in working with in-patient units for substance abuse and mental illness. during my employment there. My move to the VA was a wonderful journey and extremely educational. At this point in my life I feel that my knowledge, background, and skills has made me a well rounded therapist. I am comfortable utilizing different modalities with a variety of clients.
