Hi there, my name is Melissa and I'd love to be a support to you! I earned my Master's Degree in Social Work from the University of Michigan over 20 years ago and have worked in a variety of settings both as a medical social worker and as a therapist. I truly enjoy the strong relationships that I have built and consider myself lucky to enjoy my work every day. I have worked with a wide range of people experiencing a variety of struggles, including depression and anxiety, grief and loss and life changing transitions. These transitions may include from school to work, marriage or divorce, the birth of a child or an empty nest and changes in personal health or caregiving for a loved one. I utilize a variety of approaches to help you achieve your goal, tapping into your personal strengths and offering support and acceptance. I feel that working in a Person In Environment perspective can be validating and help people achieve their goals quicker. I also employ techniques such as Motivational Interviewing and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, recognizing that what works for one person may not work for everyone. I am excited to be a part of BetterHelp, with this platform allowing validation and support to be available to everyone, even with the hectic lifestyles many lead. I look forward to working together soon!

I have a master’s degree in Counseling with a focus on professional counseling and marriage and family therapy. Since 2009 I have worked providing individual, couples, and group counseling. I spent the first half of my career working with individuals and families affected by substance use and the last several years I have worked in a private practice setting helping people with a variety of mental health concerns. While there are very few issues I have not worked with, I have spent a significant amount of time with those working to overcome depression, anxiety, ADHD, substance use disorders, PTSD, stage of life adjustments, and parenting stressors. My experience over the last 11 years has taught me to know my clients first. There are several theoretical approaches to providing counseling, but there is no one size fits all approach. My first goal is to know my clients and what might suit them best. I view my role as a guide, a helper, a teacher. I believe each individual and their autonomy is to be respected. Every tool used in therapy should be something you can use in a way that fits your life. I believe every person has what it takes to overcome the trials they face in life. I know reaching out for help can be uncomfortable for a variety of reasons, but I’m glad you took the step. I have hope we can work together to make it worth your investment. I look forward to getting started.

Sometimes it’s hard to reach out for help when life gets difficult. I’m so glad you did, and I hope I can play a role in supporting and encouraging you. I’d like to help you learn and use strategies to address your concerns and problems, and to achieve satisfaction, fulfillment, and peace of mind. The question I begin with is not “What is wrong with you?” but rather, “What has happened to you?” I want to establish a safe, nonjudgmental and compassionate space for my clients to share their personal stories and experiences. We will collaborate to weave together elements of patterns, strengths, and coping skills to increase self-awareness, improve relationships, and promote healing and growth. Maybe you are struggling with anxiety or depression, or experiencing the effects of past or current trauma or abuse. Perhaps you are adjusting to an important life event such as the loss of a loved one or a significant relationship, a career change, a health issue. Maybe you are having difficulties in a significant relationship. I hope to be instrumental in your engagement in the dynamic process of creating positive change. I offer compassion and flexibility, knowledge and experience. I think humor, as well, is so important! It is a way to acknowledge that, although life can be painful, there is also joy to be found. I have worked in the mental health field for 14 years. I am experienced and trained in evidence-based therapeutic modalities: Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). I have worked with survivors of abuse, domestic violence, and trauma. I have worked with individuals with mood disorders, OCD, anxiety and depression, co-occurring disorders, and anger issues. I approach each client as a whole person, not just a set of diagnoses, and we work as a team, to match interventions with your particular needs. I believe I have the skills and experience, and most importantly, the desire, to help you. Thank you for reaching out!

I work with clients affected by depression, anxiety, substance use, trauma and relationship challenges from individual, group and family work. My approach to therapy is client centered: clients are the experts on their lives and determine the direction and depth of therapy. Through a strengths-based and solutions-focused lens, I draw on multiple treatment modalities to guide clients in identifying strengths and developing treatment plans that accomplish their goals. Through Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), I assist clients in exploring relationships among thoughts, feelings, and behaviors to aid in discovering dysfunctional thought patterns leading to self-destructive behaviors and beliefs. Using Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), I support clients through developing skills: mindfulness, distress tolerance, interpersonal effectiveness, and emotion regulation with the goal of moving clients towards a life involving the capacity for experiencing joy and freedom. Outside of my work as a therapist, I practice mindfulness to help me maintain balance. I also enjoy reading, biking and spending time with my family and pets traveling. In his spare time, Doug enjoys music of all genres, reading, the peace and quiet of the outdoors, exercise, and gardening. Making the decision to see a therapist is a very courageous act, and I applaud you for making the choice to seek help. I provide a very relaxed and calming atmosphere where my clients can engage in the work they need to do to effect substantive change in their lives. All of us have a tool shed full of tools which we typically use on a daily basis to cope with day-to-day stress and problems. Sometimes, however, life becomes too much, and when it does, we typically forget about the tools we have, or we lose the entire shed. My job is not to tell you what to do with your life - I do not have to live with your decisions. My job is to remind you of the tools you already have in your shed, and provide even more tools so that you can manage much more effectively and life become less distressing and intimidating. To that end, I will help you identify strategies and skills which work for you. I will help you look at things from a different perspective and may even challenge some of your long held thinking and beliefs. The therapist may be the expert on therapy, but you are the expert on you. I provide the "buffet table" of options, but you use your expertise to pick and choose "what you will eat".
