My approach is positive and hopeful while realistic, and client focused and directed. My approach is informed by Jungian perspectives, as well as cognitive behavioral approaches. I have a Master of Science in Counseling Psychology from Colorado State University. I live in the mountains of Northern New Mexico. Theorists and clinicians who inform my work include Carl Rodgers, Clarissa Pinkola Estes, Jacques Lacan, and Bracha Ettinger. I hold faith in the fact that we continue to grow heal and develop throughout the life span, and that each age and stage presents challenges and can also add richness and meaning to our life experiences. I feel passionate about the therapeutic encounter and the possibilities for healing and transformation. I bring this philosophy and clinical lens to our work together in areas ranging from trauma recovery to addiction recovery to grief and loss work, and related issues including depression, anxiety, PTSD, loneliness, and life stage challenges, including overwhelming parenting or caregiving stresses and dilemmas. Attending to emotion and the psychological experience can often help create a shift in situations or difficulties that have felt stuck and stagnant for years or decades. My approach is friendly, positive, thorough and practical. In a field that emphasizes the individual, I acknowledge the importance of systemic factors, including notably income inequality, and inequality based on sex and racialization that impact our experiences and mental health, as a factor in making decisions in our lives for our healing and wellness.

I remember that I was in the 8th grade when I became interested in human behavior. During the summer between 8th and 9th grade my father asked me if I wanted to start reading books which described varying diagnoses. Leave it up to A. Howard Bell, PhD to hand me the book SYBIL to read and discuss. That was all it took, I was hooked. All summer long I read other books which were fiction and non-fiction regarding varying diagnoses and how that person coped to social problems and the effects on one's individual psyche. As I was the daughter of a Clinical Psychologist, many other experiences were different from those who grow up in homes without a PhD in Clinical Psychology at the Helm. Not only did I read voraciously about Psychology, but I also learned information not normally given to a teen. My father was first and foremost a Rogerian Psychologist and as such decided that it would behoove me to have an understanding of Humanistic Psychotherapy before I went off to college; he was aware that Psychology had begun leaning from Psychoanalytic to Behaviorism and the " THIRD FORCE" or HUMANISM was not focused upon in the same way. My father's influence upon me gave me my beginnings as a clinician: THE RELATIONSHIP and HOW OTHERS CAN OR CANNOT RELATE TO THE THERAPIST dictated the rest of the healing process. Both Psychoanalytic and Behavioral schools at that time taught the need to stay more distanced from the Client than that of the Humanistic therapist. I even knew the why behind the therapist styles. I won't give you a lecture here as to the why of each; I would like you to read to the end of my introduction! Dad had hoped I would leave for college knowing information which might not be stressed in my college courses. As it turns out, he was correct, except for the class taught by Dr. Timmons, PSYCHOLOGY OF NORMAL BEHAVIOR. This was one of most popular classes on the LSU campus and Dr. Timmons was voted favorite "favorite professor" two out of the five years I attended classes there. I attended Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, LA because my father was conferred his doctorate there and my older brother had also chosen to attend school there. I studied what was studied then in Psychology: Emotion and Motivation, Sensation and Perception, Learning Theory, and Abnormal Psychology were a few of the courses I took. I was a research assistant for the Professor Emeritus, A.J. Riopelle, PhD; I worked in his lab studying social behavior of chimpanzees. At the time, I seemed less drawn to the Neurological basis of behavior as I was the Sociological. After receiving my BS in Psychology, I went on to graduate School at Tulane University School of Social Work In New Orleans, LA. I excelled there as I had found my niche. Understanding the person in their environment has been how I have conducted my Psychotherapy since Graduate School. I am very fortunate to have studied with those in the field of Trauma who have been on the cutting edge of research since I was in Graduate School. Trauma and Trauma therapy was just in its infancy at that time. I continued to study and plan to continue receiving certifications in my areas of interest. One of my characteristics as a clinician is that I have been a voracious reader. You may love or hate that about me. What I began learning was that traumatic experiences are processed in the brain differently than non-traumatic ones. As I grew more and more interested in Trauma treatment, I realized the invaluable information learned as an undergraduate student at LSU. Talk therapies assist in creating the relationship necessary to delve into the LIMBIC or Middle Brain; the LIMBIC BRAIN holds the trauma. “Does my situation count as a traumatic one?” you might ask. If it happened to you, you cannot let it go, and it has changed you forever, it can be seen as traumatic. There are questionnaires which assist me in quantifying the level of trauma to you, therefore helping us create the best treatment plan for you. The latest example I can think of is COVID. COVID has brought up direct and indirect loss for each person in the last 18 months. Other examples can include difficulties during childhood and adolescence with not only abuse and neglect but also friendships and other romantic and platonic relationships. Moving a lot can be hard on a child and one effect can be carried into adulthood as a generalized fear of change. Trauma can come in the form of dangerous weather creating a totally new life situation. Many today are concerned about our climate change and what that will mean for ourselves and for generations to come. It is quite traumatic for someone to grow up "different" from one's peer group. This "difference" can come in the form of race, religion, body type, intelligence level, personality style, etc. What I learned early on from Dad was that I did not have to be exactly like you or have had your particular circumstances in my life to be of service to you. This knowledge has assisted me when a therapist in Louisiana, Mississippi, and New Mexico. It is in the narrative of our lives that we can compare and contrast experiences. Finally, another characteristic about myself is that if you choose me as your therapist, you will also find that many of my experiences growing up did NOT match that of other children whose parents were in the helping professions and it was healing from those very experiences which have made me an exceptional clinician. I was not given a perfect childhood but I was given the tools early on in which what has become a life-long process of personal growth and change. What you are aware of as "the problem" and what might be an underlying problem is what we will discover during our walk together down this path called healing.

I am licensed as a clinical mental health counselor in New Mexico and Florida with over 10 years of clinical and supervisory experience. I began my counseling career in 1991 but soon left to pursue a career in the software industry. After that I underwent a 10-year period of training in Buddhist meditation and practice, before returning to counseling work. This period of training has helped me to focus on the essentials, which have to do with learning how to live in the present, accept life as it is, and find the hidden joy here. Sometimes it can help to let go, at least a little, of who you think you are and what you think you know—with all the problems those ideas often entail. This is easier said than done of course, and often we have traumatic memories, chronic pain or chronic patterns of thinking that keep us feeling trapped in a loop. I see my work as helping you shift out of whatever painful loop you’re in and to broaden your vision of life. Working on yourself takes courage, curiosity, and a willingness to grow in compassion for yourself and others. So I respect this move you're making! What you get with me is a person who will respect and listen to you, and will be looking for ways to support and accompany you on your goals. By connecting with me, you connect to my feelings and views about your situation, which often will mean that I’ll be noticing strengths and goodness that you might be missing. But it is your life and your situation, and you are in the driver’s seat regarding your life. Some specific areas I like to work on with people include: • Psychoeducation regarding how the nervous system functions to help you understand and befriend your own body; • Psychoeducation regarding how the mind functions, so that you find harmony between the different sides of yourself; • Deepening religious/spiritual understanding and the spiritual path, including learning meditative life skills; • Living through existential crises and finding new meaning; • Getting over panic attacks for good; • Healing chronic pain (through Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT); and • Resolving traumatic memories using The Flash Technique. If this sounds promising, I'd be happy to meet with you.

How does the cost of in-person counseling compare to the cost of BetterHelp with a licensed Bernalillo therapist?

The average price of an in-person therapy session in the US is $100 to $200 per hour. These prices may be higher in Bernalillo due to a higher cost of living. The price also depends on the type of provider you are looking for. See the following average prices for various mental health providers without insurance:

  • Counseling with therapists: $100-300
  • Therapy with a psychologist: $100

While many psychologists in Bernalillo may not take health insurance, some in the state of New Mexico may work on a sliding scale, meaning they'll factor in your income and charge what you can afford per session. They have been qualified and certified by their state's professional board after successfully completing the necessary education, exams, training and practice with a patient, and extensive experience in a healthcare clinic or treatment centers, in order to become a mental health provider. You can also try a Bernalillo therapy provider through BetterHelp's sister platform, ReGain, which is dedicated to couples and spouses worldwide.

How do I know if online counseling is right for my family?

One of the potentially rewarding aspects of working with a therapist is the validation and active listening they can provide. Your friends and loved ones may also be available to listen, but you may feel that they may lack the skills to provide objective guidance. Counselors are trained to respond to various concerns, symptoms, and mental health conditions.

A psychologist in your city can support you toward a healthier emotional state, regardless of your mental health, life concerns, or healing needs. While supporting individuals in developing healthier habits, another good benefit of therapy is having an understanding, safe space with a non-judgmental party who can support you through challenging experiences.

Many people have sensitive topics that they may feel ashamed to discuss with their friends or partner. A Bernalillo therapist can help you confront these concerns and open up through unique methods of support. There are also many types of therapy, such as art therapy, where you may find you can express yourself through creativity instead of words.

With a lot of people in NM, providers may be booked out with clients. Through the list of profiles above and others within BetterHelp's team, you may be able to find a psychologist within 24 to 48 hours. If you're searching to find a a nearby psychotherapist close to 87004 or the surrounding zip codes, consider others available through the BetterHelp site. No matter if you are seeking help in your area or beyond, online therapy can be a great option.

How should I prepare for my first therapy session with a Bernalillo counselor?

Before seeing your therapist, prep for your session by reading to understand the therapy process. You might write a list of questions you want to ask your psychotherapist, any emotional pain you may feel, and the ways in which you hope to improve. When you attend your session, let them know if you have any concerns about therapy or feel unsure about what to talk about. They may help guide you with open-ended therapeutic questions. The first session will often serve as an intake to get to know you as a person and learn why you're attending therapy.

Should I find a therapist or psychologist if I feel fine?

Some simply don't feel the need to see a psychologist. However, some people may avoid attending therapy due to stigma or preconceived notions of what therapy entails. Although psychologists often support people with mental health conditions, you do not need a diagnosis or condition to attend therapy. You can discuss grief, relationship concerns, stress, or life changes and ask for general feedback and advice. A Bernalillo licensed clinical social worker may help you gain power over your life and emotions while you navigate day-to-day experiences.

Gaining a new perspective on yourself through various therapies might allow you to improve your self-esteem, work through relationships, and gain a better sense of your mental health goals. The success you may find through therapy can be dependent on your process.

People may also attend therapy for specific motives, such as bullying, an autism diagnosis, a desire to learn mindfulness meditation, personality concerns, trouble with office workers, specific phobias, and many other principles.

Is mental health care and therapy worth it?

Therapy is effective and has the power to change individuals' lives. Each client is at a different stage of their emotional healing journey in life, as each human can be unique in their personality, expression, skills, and goals. A psychologist can target various symptoms, experiences, and personalities to help you feel your best and put you on the path to healing. Unlike advice from a friend, family, or non-professional, a mental health professional has an understanding of various disorders like ADHD and depression with many hours of experience in treating adults in their practice. For this reason, seeing an evidence based psychologist in Bernalillo, New Mexico can be worth it. Over 41 million adults in the US attend therapy services each year, showing it's a popular option and is proven to be effective.

Bernalillo has many clinicians who practice person or client-centered individual therapy in-person and through online therapy to assist clients in their healing journey. If you opt into online therapy, you might also be able to meet with providers all over the United States and change therapists easily at any time. Many people struggling with anxiety and depression, substance abuse, body image issues, and more find therapists that are a good fit for them, feel supported, and gain further insight into their lives through internet-based therapy.

Do therapists judge you in therapy sessions?

The boundaries between you and a therapist are in place to help you and them regarding ethical concerns. Mental health professionals are held by ethical standards through the American Psychological Association (APA) and are not allowed to judge or harm their clients. If you are concerned about sharing details about yourself, feel free to withhold personal information. Their job in the therapeutic relationship is to create a safe place, help you gain a deeper understanding of your mental health, and support you. You might consider changing counselors if you don't feel safe or respected.
