Many of us can be overwhelmed by the stress of daily living at times, and may benefit from the practical tools therapy has to offer. When it comes to finding a therapist, Roanoke, VA can offer a wider variety of options than many of the surrounding rural areas, but finding the right therapist can be difficult even in a city.

One of the reasons for this is that in the field of psychotherapy there are a number of evidence-based practices and approaches that can be more or less effective depending on the challenges being addressed, and individual preferences. For example, those seeking professional insight on building a fulfilling life may not get the most effective support from a therapist who specializes in treating children with behavioral issues. Like traditional medicine, therapy has specialization, and what you need won’t necessarily be available nearby.

This is where online therapy can help. Online therapy BetterHelp offers over 30,000 mental health professionals from licensed professional counselors to social workers, who provide support for a variety of areas from life adjustments to women’s issues. Fill out a simple online questionnaire and BetterHelp will match you with a therapist that meets your individual needs.

Online therapy can also offer a convenient solution for many busy professionals, parents, and students. Online sessions fit easily into any schedule, and with video chat, phone, and text messaging options, you can talk to your therapist from the comfort of your own home or office.

If you live in the Roanoke or Cave Spring area and have been experiencing symptoms of anxiety, depression, or other mental health conditions, or even if you simply are interested in making positive changes in your life, therapy can help. Contact BetterHelp for a simple and effective way to get started on the path to self-discovery.

Hi! My name is Charnelle Cook and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in Virginia with seven years of experience in the private practice setting. I attended Virginia Commonwealth University for undergrad and I earned my Masters of Arts in Counseling from George Washington University in 2016. I believe that all clients should be treated as individuals, but I would consider myself a strengths-based therapist; encouraging my clients to focus on the positives in their lives and the things that are going well for them and not on the things that are not going so well for them. I also utilize CBT (Cognitive Behavior Therapy) techniques when working with clients because I believe that when we are able to change our thinking, we are on the way to making changes in our lives. I believe that autonomy is important for clients when in therapy and take a person-centered approach, allowing my clients to lead their sessions with me. I believe that therapy is powerful and I love to help people work through their life challenges. Choosing to seek counseling services is a big decision to make, and I applaud you for making the first step in becoming the best version of yourself! If you send me a message during the day, I will try my best to respond within a few hours. I will respond to any messages received after 6pm on Fridays on Monday morning. In addition to sending me messages in your counseling room, you are also able to book live sessions with me by visiting my schedule and picking a time that works for you. Please remember that BetterHelp is not appropriate if you are in crisis or in immediate need of support. In crisis situations, please call 911 or local emergency services. You can also call 1-800-273-TALK (8255) to talk to someone right away! I look forward to working with you!

Hello. My name is Michael Knapik and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in Virginia and a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor in Vermont. I am also certified by the National Board for Certified Counselors. I have been working in the mental health field since 2007. (Before pursuing this career, I was a professional journalist for 30 years.) My orientation is to focus on a client’s strengths, because I believe that clients are the experts in their own lives and that the role of therapy is most often to assist clients in fully recognizing and using those strengths. My approach to therapy is eclectic. I draw on resources and interventions from positive psychology, cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, mindfulness-based stress reduction, emotional freedom techniques, solution-focused therapy, compassion-focused therapy, and family systems. I have experience working with those who are struggling with anxiety, stress, addictive disorders, grief and loss, end-of-life issues (I was a hospice volunteer for 16 years), depression, and self-harming behaviors. For today, my hope is that you have compassion for yourself. As Christopher Germer, a psychologist, has remarked: “A moment of self-compassion can change your entire day. A string of such moments can change the course of your life.”

Yes, family therapists work with individuals. In fact, most of the work I have done has been with individuals. It helps to hear “family therapy” as “systemic therapy.” Systemic therapists focus on how “big picture” factors (family, work, society) influence us and, thus, how we have to cope with them. My training has been both academic and from “the school of hard knocks.” In 2005, at age 40, I completed my PhD in child at family studies with an emphasis in counseling at the University Tennessee. I was taking a heavy course load, working two part-time jobs, and raising two young children. I consider my time as client at the student counseling center the most important part of my training. I completed my family therapy training at Good Shepherd Counseling Center under one of the earliest family therapists in Tennessee. I started by training as an undergraduate psychology major (and creative writing minor) at Carson-Newman University. I then went to seminary where I majored in pastoral counseling and worked as an aide at internationally known Norton Psychiatric Clinic. People describe me as down to earth. I grew up the son of teachers and grandson of farmers. I have baled hay, fed cattle, and spent a summer pulling steel from a 1500-degree furnace and driving a fork lift. I also was captain of my high school soccer team. If I’m not working, I’m riding my bike, watching a movie, reading a book, playing scrabble, hiking, canoeing, or refinishing furniture.
