How does one build their confidence??

I struggle with talking to people and I'm always on my phone, I have very little confidence. When I do end up talking to people, it is always awkward and that is hindering my life because I'm a salesperson, so I'm struggling to make income.

Thanks for your question! Your self-confidence is closely tied to your self-esteem and how you think and feel about yourself. Sales, as a career, usually require an outgoing or extroverted personality of the salesperson who is confident the product or service sold is the right fit to solve the customer's problem. But like any other profession, to be good at sales requires training to learn the steps and the art of making a sale, also known as closing the deal.

Suppose you are using your phone as a diversion from interacting with customers. In that case, you are sabotaging your chance to help the customers with the right product or service your company provides and putting money in your pocket to compensate you for your work. Because you may not have sales training, you may stay in your head and on your phone to avoid stepping up to help the customers. Your behavior is a classic example of low self-esteem, defined as a thinking disorder.

According to Dr. Marilyn J. Sorensen, Ph.D., low self-esteem is a hereditary thinking disorder based on upbringing. It is more a result of childhood traumas or growing up in a dysfunctional family rather than a reflection of your self-worth. The low self-esteem syndrome manifests as a host of 'symptoms such as depression, anxiety, excess weight gain, self-sabotage, etc.

Your situation is not terminal. However, you need a focused strategy to help you learn sales skills if you are sure that is your career path. To be sure of your career path requires you to do a deep dive into your life:

  • Who you are.
  • What you want out of your life.
  • How to begin to view your genuine authenticity.

You can research sales skills online to get instructions that will help boost your self-confidence. And you are not alone in feeling this way because at least 75% of the population feel the same way.

Negative self-talk can lead to you not getting the sales to make your desired income. So, you might want to change or level up your thought processes, but only if sales is your passion. If it is not, you might want to explore career counseling or research options for your professional life.

To start, you need to learn to be aware of your thoughts, actions, and behaviors, and I don't believe your situation is terminal. Try to find a mentor proficient with sales to mentor you and help you be more relaxed and engaged with the customers. It would help you and relieve you to learn to be aware of your thought patterns and how to change your thoughts when you feel less confident immediately.

However, in the meantime, I'd recommend "Breaking the Chain of Low Self-Esteem" by Dr. Marilyn J. Sorensen, Ph.D., and it's available on Amazon.com. Her books will help you figure out how to analyze and be aware of what you tell yourself that makes you feel your self-esteem is sabotaging you. I am a Certified Self-Esteem Recovery Coach and trained with Dr. Sorensen about 15 years ago. Her techniques have proven successful, and she has testimonies of working very effectively.
