Will Therapy Help Me?
There are many things that therapy can help with, and then there are many things that therapy cannot help with. Mental health therapy is geared towards helping those going through difficult times or those with chronic mental disorders. Not every one that seeks out therapy has a mental disorder, sometimes they just are going through a life change and need support to get through.
Therapy is excellent for those experiencing life changes such as starting a new job or leaving a job, becoming a parent for the first time or the 10th time, starting a relationship or ending a relationship, starting school or ending school, going through a divorce or starting life after a divorce, getting married, or anywhere in between. Changes in life happen to all of us and sometimes we just need a little bit of help to get through those moments but we're not able to speak with friends or family because they can be biased. That's when speaking with a therapist can be beneficial, there is no bias and it's a safe place to open up and explore your true feelings.
There are many other times where therapy can be helpful. Those that suffer from anxiety, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, or trauma can greatly benefit by speaking with the therapist. Therapy can provide helpful strategies to learn how to cope with issues that are taking hold and steering life in a direction other than where the individual would like to go.
Therapy can also be beneficial to educate on certain conditions and disorders. Psychoeducational groups can provide an excellent source of information and support to those that do not know much about what they are experiencing or how to cope with it. A good example of this would be a support group for anxiety. People that suffer from anxiety may attend a psychoeducational group to learn more about the causes of anxiety, ways to cope with it and learn from others on their personal experiences. This is another way that therapy can help.
There are things that therapy cannot help with search hours washing your car, doing dishes, or vacuuming. However, therapy can definitely help with motivation to carry out those tasks!
