Depression is a mood disorder that can be mild, moderate, or severe. Many times people experience depression in different ways, and children experience depression differently than adults. So it is important to connect with a therapist that works with the type of depression that you are experiencing. For example, I'm taking a child to see a therapist that only works with adults would not necessarily be helpful for the child. So, it is important to the success of therapy to match with the proper type of therapist.

Depression is highly treatable with most individuals responding very well to therapy. Working through the underlying causes of depression and developing coping strategies to deal with the symptoms is where the therapist is an expert. The therapist will probably discuss this in the first session.

The length of time that you will be therapy will be dependent on a few things search as the severity of the symptoms, the episodes of depression and the frequency, and the issues that may stem from the past that are affecting present-day feelings. If the depressive symptoms are more recent and there is no history of depression in the past, then therapy may last for a couple of months. If there is a history of depressive episodes and symptoms throughout the lifetime, therapy sessions will more than likely last beyond a couple of months.

During therapy sessions, the therapist will inquire about and explore the symptoms that are being experienced, the frequency of the symptoms, and things that are happening in life at the moment. The client and therapist will discuss how the depression is impacting their life and if there are tasks that cannot be completed due to the depressive symptoms. The therapist may also ask the client to complete assessments to help determine the severity of the depression.

The therapist and client will create a plan on how to work through the client's depression. It's important that the client be honest with the therapist so the therapist can provide the best treatment possible. Most therapists do not prescribe medication, however, they may discuss the option of medication during a session if the depression is severe. Medication and therapy can work very well together to help the client get through these difficult times.

Therapy is extremely effective for treating depression , the key is to finding a therapist that helps you feel comfortable and that you are willing to work together with.
