how do i concentrate on my studies?
Hello and thanks for reaching out. Excellent that you're seeking guidance and advice rather than turning away from your concern.
First of all, sorry that you're experiencing this stress and difficulty. Life has a way of throwing us challenges, and from those challenges we have the opportunity to really learn more about ourselves, other people and the world. And it sounds as if this is one of those challenges that you're experiencing. So while difficult, by seeking out therapy, you will be giving yourself a chance to understand the root causes of what you're experiencing. It can be very difficult to know what is contributing to difficulty concentrating, trouble focusing, or losing motivation and finding the answer is a process, therefore I hope you strongly consider signing up for therapy to understand what is at the root of this change in motivation.
What I've seen lead to a decrease in motivation in my clients include many issues and concerns, life changes, and events. Some of my clients seek out a neuropsych evaluation from a psychiatrist to better understand the bigger picture of their thinking, focus, and mood. Others are able to identify that they are experiencing high anxiety and/or depression, which can highjack our thinking and make concentration and motivation a challenge at times. Others have experienced life changes and traumas that have led to difficulty concentrating. It's individual, therefore it's a good idea to work with a therapist to uncover what is at the heart of the matter.
In the meantime, self care is extremely essential to the best performance....especially good sleep, a good diet where you don't skip meals, moderate exercise, and relaxation. Also, keeping a connection to others is essential. Using a schedule to map out your work is also very helpful, along with setting an alarm for 45 minutes during which time you carve out that time to do your work, then give yourself a reward. Then do that again until you tackle your work. Oftentimes getting started can be the most challenging part as we can think that we are going to struggle or feel terrible while doing the work, when in reality, that is not the case at all.
I hope you find this helpful. All the best to you!
