Chakras are part of an ancient system of healing that originates in India and was first mentioned in religious texts called the Vedas around 1000 B.C. Chakra translates from Sanskrit to mean “wheel” and refers to energy centers in the body. They can be visualized as spinning circles of energy. When chakras become imbalanced, closed, or misaligned in yogic science and Ayurvedic medicine, there are mental, emotional, and physical impacts.

The main chakra system includes seven chakras that run along the spine from its root to the crown of the head. These are:

  • Root chakra – Located at the base of the spine, feelings of insecurity or doubts about the safety or basic needs may be reflected here. This chakra is also linked with our stability, grounding, and physical identity.
  • Sacral chakra – Located below the navel and above the pubic bone, this chakra is linked with self-worth and how we feel about ourselves regarding pleasure and sexuality. Sexuality and creativity are thought to be governed by this chakra.
  • Solar plexus chakra – Located in the upper abdomen, this chakra is related to self-esteem and self-confidence.
  • Heart chakra – Located in the center of the chest, this chakra is related to our ability to connect. If it’s not in balance, we may feel lonely, isolated, or insecure.
  • Throat chakra – Located in the throat, this chakra is linked with our ability to communicate well, listen well, and speak confidently.
  • Third eye chakra – Located between the eyes on the forehead, this chakra is related to intuition.
  • Crown chakra – Located at the top or “crown” of the head, this chakra is linked to all the others and is related to our ability to be open-minded.

After reading those descriptions, it may be easy to see that feelings of guilt can be related to a few of the chakras. The source of guilt plays a role in what chakras may be involved. Financial difficulties that lead to guilt for having difficulty making ends meet may involve the root chakra. The sacral chakra is linked with feelings of self-worth and how we think of ourselves in terms of our behavior. The solar plexus chakra that houses self-esteem may be involved as well. Because the crown chakra is linked with our beliefs and thinking, including beliefs and thoughts about ourselves, it is involved in beliefs and thoughts that we may have that create feelings of guilt.
