Body language is important when it comes to non-verbal communication.  Many people can send a message without the use of one word, and this is through the use of body language.  So, to help better understand those around you, it is very important to take the time to observe and understand their body language.  It is also important to observe your own body language and how your own body language can portray a message to others.  Something else to consider is cultural differences, as this can affect how body language is interpreted.  For example, in western culture, eye contact is a way to send the message that you are engaged in what someone is telling you.  While in eastern culture, eye contact can be perceived as disrespectful and/or threatening.  Let us review some of the commonly used body languages:

  1. Arms: Crossed arms indicate a closed off mind or an unwillingness to receive information.  Vice versa, open arms indicate an open mind.
  2. Eye contact: Intense eye contact can indicate threats.  Avoidant eye contact can be perceived as dismissive and/or dishonest.  Soften eyes demonstrate attentiveness without being overly intense or dismissive; it shows a warm and welcoming message.  The length of the eye contact can also send a message.
  3. Mouth: A tight and/or pursed set of lips sends the message that there is anger and tension.
  4. Shoulders: Slouched shoulders can indicate a disinterest in what the other person is saying.  While a postured back and shoulder lets the other person know that you are interested and listening to what is being said.
  5. Handshake: A firm handshake indicates confidence, whereas a loose or limp handshake indicates a lack of self-confidence.
  6. Legs: Typically, the direction that your feet are pointed can show where your interest is directed at.  If your feet are pointed towards the speaker, it can show that you listen to what they are saying.  Whereas if they are pointed in the opposite direction, you could be sending a message you are looking to escape.

Keeping in mind is that many people can perceive body language incorrectly, so as helpful as body language can be, it is not the sole form of communication.  Verbal communication is important as well to help clarify any misperceptions in body language.  For some, though, verbal communication is more challenging, and send messages through body language is their preferred method of sending messages to another person.
