Mindfulness is considered to be the key to living in the “here and now.” It involves allowing individuals to be present at the moment. Mindfulness allows for individuals to be present and at the moment without fear of being judged or ridiculed for what they are experiencing at that moment. It is important for individuals to feel safe and comfortable with their present thoughts without the fear of being judged or ridiculed at that moment. This present moment experience can allow the client the ability to deescalate and take control of their thoughts and feelings before they act or behave in a way that can cause unwanted consequences later because of their actions that were quickly escalated because the individual did not have time to stop and think about their actions before they engaged to quickly into a behavior.

Having the time to practice Mindfulness is important because it allows individuals to stop and think in the present moment before they feel the need or impulse to rush and try to tackle situations. Once they become present in the moment, they can take the time to process their thoughts and feeling before they engage in making an irrational or negative decision based on impulse. Mindfulness is important because it can allow the individual the time and opportunity to sort out the facts versus their assumptions and opinions regarding the specific situation, issues, or experience that led to a change in their behavior.

Instead of waiting to tackle the situation after the unwanted behavior or consequence has been established or implemented beyond the individual's control, Mindfulness can be quite beneficial in helping an individual take the time to gain mental control before they make an irrational decision or impulsive decision. It is very important to remember that individuals have control over themselves, so when someone utilizes Mindfulness, it can help them process and access their thinking patterns at the moment. The utilization of Mindfulness techniques can help the individual work diligently to become more proactive with their behaviors before they encounter a situation that is beyond his or their control.
