Dating apps have grown steadily in popularity over the last few years. With the social distancing and lockdown requirements that evolved due to the COVID-19 pandemic, they have become an even more popular way to meet others looking to date. Even though talking with people online and meeting people in person that we’ve met online is increasingly commonplace, there are still some safety concerns to keep in mind when entering the online dating scene.

From identity theft to “catfishing,” everyone has heard online dating horror stories. Catfishing is the term for someone who pretends to be someone other than online; using fake photos, false personal information, and more to meet someone is sadly a commonplace event.

Perhaps the most simple tip is to have a video chat with a potential date before meeting in person. FaceTime, Skype, and Zoom are all free and easy ways to set up a video call. This allows you to have real-time and face interaction with someone. Having a video call also allows you to check out your potential date’s home and environment in the background. A video chat may cut down on catfishing and other risks of online dating.

Chatting by phone is another solid option for feeling out the person you intend to meet up with. It lets you pick up on verbal cues that you may miss in messaging and texting. Driving yourself to your date is another way to prevent the potential for issues. If you want to leave early or find that things aren’t going well, you’ll be able to leave when you’re ready. Having your own car handy also helps you avoid potentially dangerous situations because you can control where you go.

Be sure to share the details of your date with someone you trust. Share where you’re going, what time you plan to be home, the person’s name, and other important details. Someone else knowing where you mean that if something goes wrong, you’ll have a backup. Meet for your first date in a public place so that there are other people around if you need help.

While online dating for most people is a safe experience, it also comes with unique safety concerns. Take time to get to know someone and follow the safety tips above to keep things safe and fun.
