How dating has change?
Much of the changes with dating have evolved from the changes in technology. Much research is being conducted on how technology has morphed the way we connect with human beings, including the realm of dating. From what has been explored thus far, it seems that technology has increased our accessibility to people, which can be helpful when trying to meet new people for dating purposes. However, it has also come to be believed that the quality of our relationships with people is declining. Social media and dating apps have created this ability for people to display “parts” of themselves but not necessarily displaying their full authentic selves, which can lead to superficial relationships. Superficial relationships tend to lack connection on a deeper level, and when thinking of long-term relationships, this means the satisfaction with your partner may not be as high.
Something else to consider with the change in dating through technology is how apps created a very dismissive culture; through the use of “swiping,” you can easily dismiss a person with a preconceived judgment. For others, the dating app can create obsessive and compulsive behaviors. There is instant gratification associated with dating apps; with the flick of a finger, you have access to a robust dating pool at any given time. This can cause your thoughts to become obsessive, constantly thinking about what dating options are out there. You may even notice a compulsion to check your phone for notifications and messages. These behaviors can lead to increased anxiety; it is subtle in nature, so you may not notice it right away.
This is not to say that technology and dating apps are completely dangerous and unhealthy; there is much opportunity associated with dating apps. For those that are more introverted and shy, this is a helpful way to connect with people so that you can explore dating options within your own comfort. However, if you are not mindful of how you are managing your behaviors/thoughts associated with dating apps, then you are likely to find yourself in an unhealthy pattern and also developing a pattern of unhealthy/inauthentic relationships. So use your technology wisely!
