To a certain extent, all things must come to an end at some point.  There are many reasons that relationships come to an end, but if you want to sum it down to the main contributing factor, it is most likely ending due to lack of effort.  Maintaining any relationship, whether it is family, intimate, or friendship, requires effort.  This does not necessarily mean that you are required to reach out to someone daily to put effort into the relationship.  But to some degree, effort needs to be made fairly regularly.

Sometimes relationships can end, amicably meaning all parties involved in the relationship are comfortable with parting ways.  This could be due to various reasons; perhaps the individuals grew apart due to lifestyle changes.  Our priorities change with advances in careers, getting married, and/or having children.  Some relationships may end due to a change in your lifestyle.  Even in intimate relationships, if the individuals grow apart due to life goals changing, they may agree to end the relationship without any animosity.  In friendships and/or family, your priorities change, and perhaps this may lead to a natural separation from certain relationships.  Although, you are more likely to see this in friendships versus family.  Again, the relationships are ending at the end of the day due to a lack of effort.

There may be instances where relationships end with lingering negative feelings due to some discord.  To reinforce what was already mentioned, the effort and work put into a relationship help it withstand; however, there may be times when it is within your best interest to end the relationship instead of trying to keep it going.  Most certainly, in situations where your physical safety is being compromised, it is helpful to consider terminating the relationship.  This is also true in emotional safety, but this is more subjective to where the person feels they can tolerate certain behaviors that are compromising their emotional wellbeing.

Even if the relationship ends, the memories and learned experiences will always be there for you, which is quite valuable.  Relationships definitely will come and go, but the lessons learned are with you for life.  So always keep that back of your mind if you find yourself mourning over the loss of a relationship.
