will relationships last?
At one time or another, most people have thought, ‘if only I could look into a crystal ball and see whether or not this relationship will last for the long haul.’ People understand and know the investment that it takes for a long-standing relationship to become successful and stay that way. Developing a strong foundation of clear communication and expectations and a balance of teamwork and independence make some relationships last indefinitely. However, the problem with this assumption is that there are at least two people involved in any relationship, and no two people are exactly alike. It’s very difficult to tell what stressors and life events will affect people sometimes to break away from their long-standing relationships. Even in the best of circumstances, people grow and change as they age, and they may not be able to stay in a relationship for several reasons. A big factor in relationships lasting is two people finding each other with enough similar temperament traits and commonalities to work together for a very long time.
Longevity
Looking at the current generation and how a pop culture views relationships, there are many short-lived, intense relationships both in the spotlight and throughout the general population. Whether or not relationships last can have a lot to do with whether or not people can fall in love, stay in love, and learn to live harmoniously. This concept of falling in love that people can sometimes feel very addicted to, so as soon as a relationship hits a certain mark, it can be hard to continue it because the feelings become a little more even-keeled. So many people believe that the spark is gone when love can be mature or maybe certain love was not there in the first place.
Staying power
So how do relationships last? And will they last? In working with clients, much of the focus of these questions actually falls on the individual. Learning to incorporate a strong self-care routine and develop self-love can make a person a better partner and a better person able to sustain life’s stressors. Another key ingredient in ensuring that relationships last is the common answer of effective communication but adding boundaries that honor the other and the self. Years together does not equal dismissing thoughtfulness and consideration when making life decisions or even small ones that affect both parties. People who have been together for a very long time at times can begin to take for granted knowing each other so well. It continues to be very beneficial in checking in with each other no matter how long two people are together. There’s no magic formula for making relationships last, but relationships have a stronger chance by following a few of these guidelines.
