Happiness is something most people are hoping to attain and maintain.  Though happiness seems so hard to reach for so many, some people might feel like happy moments are few and far between.  For those of us that are having a hard time attaining happiness, the good news is that it can be learned to some extent.  One of the key steps to learning to be happy is to be more present.  The business of life can get in the way of happiness, so one important key is to slow down, even if just for a moment, to allow yourself to be more present.  This process of being more present can also be referred to as mindfulness.  When we are more mindful, we are more present in the good things around us.

As you are more present with the things around you, it will be important to force yourself to pick up on the good things.  Gratitude is incredibly transformational and can lead to overall happiness. If you can pick up on big and small good things in your life, it will help your mind be more positive.  There will still be negatives occurring in your life, but the balance of goodwill helps your mind feel more positives as you cope with the negatives.  Happiness will fluctuate, but that does not mean it is gone, so try to remember that throughout.

The most important part of learning to be happy is consistency.  If you are only practicing gratitude and mindfulness once a week, it will likely not be effective if you can do it daily, even if just for less than a minute, your mind is more likely to pick up on this way of thinking, and you should hopefully feel in a more positive state.  Happiness is a state of mind that can improve your overall mental and physical health, so making it a priority to learn is the best thing for you.  If you can be consistent with this part of your mental health, the valleys in your life will be so much easier to navigate.
