How Careers Have Changed?

Throughout the past decades which careers are in most demand have changed. There has been of course a large demand for those in the technology sector, such as those skilled with computers. There has also been a greater demand for medical care due to the baby boomer generation aging. Additionally, there have been more opportunities, because of technology, to work from home.

In addition to changes in what careers are available, the concept of a career may be shifting. Today, younger adults are tending to spend less time in careers. Before, it was more common for an individual to stay at one company for decades until retirement, but now it has become more common for people to look for other career options while employed. In addition, a greater number of people who have college degrees and who are working in a field are determining that they no longer wish to continue with that career and choose to go back to school.

More people are choosing to attend college than before, and college options (online, community colleges, etc.) are making it easier for people who work full-time jobs and/or who have significant family obligations to fit furthering their education into their schedule. Because of a higher percentage of the population having college degrees, a greater number of jobs are requiring more than a high school diploma or a GED. In fact, in some fields, there are few career options for someone with an Associate’s Degree or Bachelor’s Degree. When looking at potential careers, consider how much education with which you are willing to commit and avoid making impulsive decisions associated with enrolling in school, as you could be left with hefty loans. Furthermore, it can be helpful to keep your resume up to date and be aware of other opportunities that open up.

The tendency for people to switch careers more frequently may bring some benefits to all workers, as companies may experience greater pressure to offer perks, such as more benefits, opportunities to be flexible with the work schedule or to work from home, paid college tuition, or a more casual dress code. Additionally, as society becomes more accepting of someone who leaves a job due to becoming discontent with the work itself or the work environment, individuals can feel more liberated to find careers and environments that offer more satisfaction.
